Tiger 3 (2023)

In the fifth instalment of the franchise, Salman Khan returns to the turbulent world of Avinash ‘Tiger’ Singh Rathore.

By his side is the love of his life Zoya (Katrina Kaif). She is just as capable as her husband.

The film is laden with expertly crafted action scenes including one that sees Zoya fighting General Zimou (Michelle Lee).

The two indomitable women are only wearing towels.

Discussing the action scenes, Katrina explains: “For Tiger 3, my action prep was at least for about two months.

“We wanted Zoya to look agile, have more speed, and greater strength.

“I really had to go through the grind and it was definitely the toughest training of my career so far.

“When you see the kind of action that Zoya has done, you will realise that such sequences may not have been attempted by a woman before.”

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023)

Karan Johar’s fun family drama explores a plethora of love stories spanning multiple generations.

Rocky and Rani fall in love, but they must contend with both their cultural and familial differences.

To do this, they spend time with each other’s families.

In an entertaining, heart-warming scene, Rocky does a kathak dance along with Rani’s father Chandon Chatterjee (Tota Roy Chowdhury).

Meanwhile, Rani bonds closely with Rocky’s ageing grandfather Kanwal Lund (Dharmendra).

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is the quintessential Karan Johar.

Satyaprem Ki Katha (2023)

Director Sameer Vidwans carves together a love story brimming with the uniqueness that you don’t see at the movies anymore.

Kartik Aaryan inhabits the world of Satyaprem ‘Sattu’, who is head-over-heels in love with Katha Kapadia (Kiara Advani).

Sattu is determined to romance Katha, but is frustrated when she reveals that she is asexual.

Katha is a talented dancer, but after a recital, she was raped by her ex-boyfriend Tapan Manek (Arjun Aneja).

The romance then melds into a battle for justice, as both Sattu and Katha help each other overcome the demons that surround them.

Reviewing the film on Medium, Surjendu Ghosh praises the performance of the two leads:

“The star of the show is Kiara Advani. She perfectly captures the film’s emotional moments.

Bawaal (2023)

Amazon Prime offers you an intricate look into the trials of married life.

Bawaal is the story of the image-conscious teacher Ajay Dixit (Varun Dhawan) and his epileptic, successful wife Nisha Dixit (Janhvi Kapoor).

In a moment of rage, Ajay lands himself in trouble when he slaps a student.

This leads to Ajay and Nisha embarking on a life-changing journey around Europe to discover the sites of World War Two.

The couple faces history, life, and interpersonal conflicts.

Dhaval Roy highlights Janhvi for her performance:

Ajay plays the titular ex-convict who grapples with his past as a gangster.

His love for Dr Swara (Amala Paul) made him give up his criminal ways, and she gave birth to their daughter Jyothi.

However, tragedy struck when Swara was murdered by a gang leader named Chomu Singh (Abhishek Bachchan).

Bholaa is a nail-biting film that presents Ajay at his very best.

Loved for his onscreen intensity, Ajay disappears into the character, proving his acting chops yet again.

Discussing the balance between emotion and action in Bholaa, Ajay explains:

“If you do action without any reason, there will be no reaction for it no matter how good action it is.

“I don’t think there is a difference between mass and family audience when emotions are concerned.

“Emotions are universal, like the emotion of a father and mother for their children is the same.”

Bholaa is just as much a family saga as it is an action film. It is a gripping movie that is worth a watch.

Maidaan (2024)

Continuing with the iconic artist, Ajay Devgn, we come to the epic sports film Maidaan.

In the film, Ajay becomes the legendary Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim.

Rahim forms a new team, much to the disdain of those around him.

The team scores well, but devastating news is in store for Rahim later in the film.

Despite this dramatic turn in events, Rahim does not stop motivating his team, which leads his naysayers to support him.

Sports becomes a battle of will and wit, as Rahim and his team devote every fibre of their beings to coming out on top within the pitch.

Shubhra Gupta speaks glowingly of Maidaan via The Indian Express.

He writes: “This underdog story makes you want to clap and cheer, and wipe away a proud tear.”

In the form of Maidaan, Amazon Prime contains a terrific mosaic of drama.

Yodha (2024)

In a movie with patriotism at its core, Yodha tells the story of Arun Katyal (Sidharth Malhotra).

He is an army soldier and a member of the Yodha Task Force.

Idolising his father who has been killed, the mission of Arun is to make his father proud by donning the uniform of the Task Force.

Sidharth delivers an exemplary performance.

He is aided by sterling acts from Raashii Khanna (Priyamvada ‘Priya’ Katyal) and Disha Patani (Laila Khalid).

Reviewing the film for The Guardian, Catherine Bray enthuses:

“Malhotra gives a credibly handsome turn in the main role.”

“Playing the sort of chap who can take a finger in the bullet hole in his arm without blubbing about it, while smoothly delivering lines like: ‘My country will exist forever’.”

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024)

This film presents a vivacious Kriti Sanon unlike anything previously.

In America, the robotics engineer Aryan Agnihotri/Aaru (Shahid Kapoor) meets SIFRA (Kriti).

He falls in love with her. However, she is a robot that his aunt is using to test whether human beings can differentiate between her and themselves.

Aryan introduces SIFRA to his family in India, leading to SIFRA corrupting her memory before the wedding.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is a blend of technology and love.

Kriti invests herself in the film, while Shahid holds his own.

Justin Joseph Rao heaps positivity on Kriti for her acting in the film:

“The actor has assuredly showcased her range in a very controlled, consistent act in the film.

“It was a tough task, but Kriti Sanon held her ground rather well.

“Her performance in it is an answer to her acting critics.”

In the 1990s, Kunal Khemu was a beloved child star.

He acted in blockbusters including Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993), Raja Hindustani (1996), and Zakhm (1998).

Here, he turns into a director, making a solid debut with Madgaon Express.

Combining friendship with gangsterism, the film is an enthralling tale of Dhanush ‘Dodo’ Sawant (Divyenndu).

Divyenndu navigates life with his friends Pratik ‘Pinku/Pinkya’ Garodia (Pratik Gandhi) and Ayush Gupta (Avinash Tiwary).

Speaking about the film, producer Farhan Akhtar expresses:

“You have to invest in the people on screen. You have to see your friends in them, identify, want to be a part of that group.

“Of course, there is a story, a beginning, middle and end, but what you really enjoy is how they are dealing with things.

“I loved the guys in Madgaon Express and the humour is absolutely incredible.

“When you sit alone in a room and laugh loudly while reading something, that pretty much tells you what you are feeling.

“You are not forced to laugh because someone is narrating it to you and you have no choice!

“It was a quick read, is aspirational and has some great characters apart from the three boys.”
