Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan is currently enjoying the spotlight following the commercial success of Housefull 5. However, while the film is making headlines, here, the focus shifts to the actor himself.

Abhishek Bachchan has had a steady yet unremarkable career in the industry, known for his perseverance rather than major box-office triumphs. Despite a few hits, superstardom has largely eluded him.

Interestingly, there are three major films he reportedly declined, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, and Rang De Basanti, each of which went on to become iconic blockbusters. Had he taken on these roles, his career trajectory might have looked very different.

Lagaan (2001): Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan was a period sports drama that made waves globally. Abhishek Bachchan was reportedly the original choice for the lead, but he turned it down. The role eventually went to Aamir Khan, who also produced the film. Featuring Gracy Singh and British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne, Lagaan became a critical and commercial sensation.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001): This modern coming-of-age drama, directed by Farhan Akhtar and produced by Excel Entertainment, was initially conceived with Abhishek Bachchan in mind. Due to unknown reasons, he didn’t join the project. The film, starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna, became a cultural milestone and a massive hit.

Rang De Basanti (2006): Written and directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Rang De Basanti blended politics, history, and youth activism. Abhishek Bachchan was reportedly the first choice, but declined the offer. Once again, the role went to Aamir Khan, and the film emerged as one of the most impactful and successful films of the decade. It featured a strong ensemble including Siddharth, Soha Ali Khan, and Alice Patten.

Though these missed opportunities are a notable “what if” in his career, Abhishek Bachchan’s persistence and ongoing contributions continue to earn him respect in the industry.
