Composer AR Rahman said that he is happy with the kind of work he is doing in the Hindi film industry today, years after he first opened up about how a “gang” was planting false stories against him, which, he said, led to a decline in Bollywood offers. The composer said that the work he is doing today is giving him satisfaction, a departure from feeling relegated to the sidelines a few years ago.

During an interview with Connect Cine, Rahman was asked about that phase in his life, and if he is in a better position today. The composer said that he is in a happier space now, as he is getting to work on quality projects with his longtime collaborators Mani Ratnam and Imtiaz Ali. He worked with them on the recent films Ponniyin Selvan and Amar Singh Chamkila.

“At that point of time I did feel like that because I heard a few stories, that somebody mentioned my name and then the other persons said, ‘No, no, I will finance this movie and I will get you five-six people to do this stuff’. I am very happy working with the people I am collaborating now. The freedom which I have now, is to do good movies like films of Imtiaz Ali and Mani Ratnam. That is very satisfying and other big movies in Bollywood. My plates are full and these are very challenging movies, something I am proud to be a part of,” he added.

In an earlier interview with Radio Mirchi, Rahman had revealed how he doesn’t turn down good offers but they simply don’t come to him as there is a “gang, which, due to misunderstandings, is spreading some false rumours.” The composer had said that when casting director Mukesh Chhabra came to him to compose for Dil Bechara, he gave him four songs in two days.

“Mukesh told me, ‘Sir, how many people said don’t go, don’t go to him (AR Rahman) and they told me stories after stories.’ I heard that, and I realised, ‘Yes, okay, now I understand why I am doing less (work in Hindi films) and why the good movies are not coming to me’. I am doing dark movies, because there is a whole gang working against me, without them knowing that they are doing harm.”
