Now filmmakers have turned the table and enabled women to take centre stage. Now, many movies are taking the lead in breaking the moulds women have been cast in and moving away from the stereotypical characters. These movies show strong female characters with a mind of their own. Most importantly, most of these women-centric movies turned out to be a blockbuster hit despite no male leads.

Queen (2013)

Kangana Ranaut carried the movie on her shoulders. Vijay, played by Rajkumar Rao, had only one job in the movie; that is, refusing to marry Rani just a day before their wedding. This heartbreak made Rani make a move to go alone to Paris for her pre-booked honeymoon and what follows is a journey of exploration and identity formation. This movie is streaming on Netflix.

English Vinglish (2012)

The movie follows the story of Shashi Godbole, a successful entrepreneur who has just one thing lacking – her inability to speak English. This made her an object of humiliation by her family. Kahaani (2012)

This movie has a strong representation of a modern woman.
