The horror-comedy ‘Munjya’. starring Mona Singh, Sharvari Wagh, and Abhay Verma, has been drawing audiences to cinema halls since its release on June 7. Following a strong box office performance on Friday and Saturday, the film remained steady on Sunday, June 9.

According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, ‘Munjya’ recorded a box office collection of Rs 7.75 crore on Day 3 (Sunday, June 9), bringing its three-day total to Rs 19 crore. The film opened on Friday with Rs 4 crore, followed by Rs 7.25 crore on Saturday. On Sunday, it maintained an overall occupancy of 36.64 per cent in the Hindi-speaking belt, with the highest audience turnout for the evening shows.

The film has emerged as a surprise hit, surpassing ‘Mr and Mrs Mahi’, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, as well as Ajay Devgn’s ‘Maidaan’.

‘Mr and Mrs Mahi’, a sports-based drama, earned Rs 16.85 crore in its first weekend, compared to ‘Munjya’s’ Rs 19 crore. Even ‘Maidaan’ trailed behind ‘Munjya’, collecting Rs 9.8 crore within three days of its release.

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared how ‘Munjya’s’ box office performance has “stunned” the film industry. He noted on X, “

ROCKING WEEKENDâ€æ #Munjya springs the BIGGEST SURPRISE, leaves the industry SHOCKED and STUNNED… Defies ALL *pre-release* expectations and calculations. Proves ALL *post-release* predictions wrong by a wide margin. Silences those who felt #Munjya should’ve taken direct-to-digital route. #Munjya – without the backing of star/s or popular music – trends BETTER than *several* star-studded films released in 2023 and 2024. [Week 1] Fri [incl Thu midnight screenings] 4.21 cr, Sat 7.40 cr, Sun 8.43 cr. Total: ₹ 20.04 cr. #India biz. #Boxoffice (sic).”

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, ‘Munjya’ revolves around a wandering spirit haunting a teenager. Mona Singh portrays the teenager’s mother, and Sharvari Wagh plays his love interest. The film is produced by Maddock Films, known for horror-comedies like ‘Stree’, ‘Roohi’, and ‘Bhediya’.

Like other films under the banner of this genre, ‘Munjya’ incorporates a subtle message into its narrative. “The messaging has to be done very subtly because the audience doesn’t want to be preached to. ‘Munjya’ is about how to approach the person you love,” Sarpotdar told India Today Magazine.
