The trailer for Siddhanth Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri’s upcoming film, Dhadak 2, was released recently, and the actors left fans impressed with their talent and chemistry. However, some are unhappy to see that Siddhant Chaturvedi’s complexion has been darkened with makeup as he is playing a poor character from a marginalised community.

Some netizens took to social media to point out that the makeup treatment is similar to the kind used on Hrithik Roshan in Super 30. Some others claimed that while Siddhant Chaturvedi is a brilliant actor, Bollywood need not always darken its poor characters. This discourse has gone viral across social media platforms. Have a look here:

One Redditor wrote, “Even if they claim that poor people don’t have skincare routines and get tanned from not using sunscreen, why don’t they just cast an actual brown person instead of doing all this with makeup and weird stereotypes?” Another wrote, “As per Bollywood, jinka colour fair hai wo gareeb kese ho sakta hai.” One person wrote, “This has always been problematic.” Another added, “Poor ko saavla dikhao.. rich ko gora – stereotypical mindset of Bollywood movies.”

Another person commented, “Constantly just showcasing one specific group as a skintone just gives me another ‘fair and lovely’ kinda stigma.” One comment read, “That’s so horrible.” One user wrote, “I’ve also seen people criticise Janhvi’s clear skin in Good Luck Jerry, as if being poor automatically means you can’t have good skin or follow any kind of basic skincare routine. It’s wild how some expect poverty to be visually loud, dirt on the face, cracked lips, and dark circles, otherwise it’s ‘not believable’. “

Meanwhile, in Dhadak 2, Siddhant plays the role of Neelesh, a small-town boy, and delivers a powerful and emotionally charged performance, as seen in the trailer. Siddhant Chaturvedi has mostly portrayed urban characters. This marks his first venture into the world of small-town India on screen – a move that resonates with his roots in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

At the trailer launch of Dhadak 2, Siddhant said, “As an actor, I feel truly fortunate that Karan (Johar) sir had faith in me and chose me to portray a small-town character. Until now, most of the films I’ve done have been urban-centric, and since I come from a small town, Ballia, I was missing that kind of small-town story.”

Directed by Shazia Iqbal in her debut feature, Dhadak 2 is produced by a powerhouse team including Karan Johar, Umesh Kumar Bansal, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Meenu Aroraa, Somen Mishra, and Pragati Deshmukh. The film is set to release in theatres on August 1, 2025.
