Stree 2 is taking the box office by storm. The horror-comedy, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao has emerged as the biggest Bollywood opener of the year. It is also the highest-grossing opener for both it’s lead actors, and the most successful opener for a Bollywood horror film.

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 has remained unchallenged at the box office, even in the face of competition from Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein and John Abraham’s Vedaa. The film has not only been buoyed by rave reviews, but has also capitalized on the Independence Day holiday in India.

On its opening day, August 15, Stree 2 raked in an impressive Rs 51.8 crore, according to Sacnilk. This staggering number marks the biggest Bollywood opening of the year, surpassing the previous leaders, Fighter and Kalki 2898 (Hindi), both of which collected around Rs 22.6 crore on their first day, according to India Today.

The film also dominated advance bookings, with 824,483 tickets sold across single screens and multiplexes, placing it seventh in the all-time rankings. It follows behind blockbusters like Baahubali 2 (Hindi) with 650,000 tickets, Jawan with 557,000, Pathaan’s 556,000, KGF 2’s (Hindi) 515,000, Animal with 460,000, and War with 410,000, according to The Indian Express.

According to Sacnilk, the record for the biggest ever opener in Bollywood is held by the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan (2023), which raked in Rs 65.5 crore on its opening day. Overall, Stree 2 is fifth on the list of biggest Bollywood openers, after Jawan, Pathaan (Rs 55 crore), Animal (Rs 54.75 crore) and KGF Chapter 2 (Rs 53.95 crore).

However, Stree 2 still stands above some of Bollywood’s biggest blockbusters. The 2019 hit War earned Rs 51.6 crore on its opening day, just shy of the Rs 51.8 crore collected by Stree 2.

Other Bollywood blockbusters which raked in less than Stree 2 on its opening day include Happy New Year (Rs 42.62 crore), Baahubali 2 (Rs 41 crore), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Rs 40.35 crore), Gadar 2 (Rs 40.1 crore), Sultan (Rs 36.5 crore) Sanju (Rs 34.75 crore), Tiger Zinda Hai (Rs 34.1 crore), Dhoom 3 (Rs 33.42 crore), Chennai Express (Rs 33.12 crore), Ek Tha Tiger (Rs 32.93 crore), Singham Returns (Rs 32.1 crore), Golmaal Again (Rs 30.14 crore), Dangal (Rs 29.19 crore), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs 27.25 crore) and PK (Rs 26.63 crore), according to Sacnilk.

Following its impressive Rs 51.8 crore opening day, Stree 2 continued to perform strongly at the box office. The film earned Rs 31.4 crore on its second day, Rs 43.85 crore on its third day, and approximately Rs 55 crore on its fourth day. This brings the film’s total box office collection in India to Rs 190.55 crore, according to Sacnilk.
