Channing Tatum’s Anime Movie Slays the Box Office in Massive Domestic Debut
Projected to shatter box office expectations, the Japanese blockbuster Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle finally landed on domestic shores, having already broken records overseas. The movie has made more than $300 million from international markets, and should comfortably pass the half-billion mark worldwide by Sunday. A major chunk of this revenue is expected to come from domestic theaters, where Demon Slayer will set a new record for anime titles. The movie grossed around $33 million on opening day, easily outperforming the $20 million that Pixar’s Elio generated across its entire opening weekend.
Demon Slayer is currently eyeing around $55 million in its first three days of release domestically, although this figure could balloon to around $60 million as well. This would depend on how front-loaded the film’s performance is; anime movies tend to have a devoted fanbase that shows up on opening day, but if Demon Slayer manages to cross over to the mainstream by Saturday, it could end up doing the sort of business that Brad Pitt‘s F1 did in its first weekend. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, that movie made $57 million in its first weekend and more than $600 million worldwide by the end of its run.
The previous opening weekend record for an anime title in America was held by Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, which made $21 million in its domestic debut and grossed over $500 million at the worldwide box office. It’s the highest-grossing anime film in history. This year has already seen a foreign-language animated title break records at the box office. The Chinese mega-hit Ne Zha 2 became the first animated film in history to pass the $2 billion mark worldwide.
The Film’s English Voice Cast Is Led by Channing Tatum
Demon Slayer‘s tremendous performance so far suggests that it will comfortably gross more than several Hollywood tentpoles this year. It should overtake the likes of The Fantastic Four: First Steps and even Superman in the next few weeks, as it expands into more countries. The Demon Slayer franchise was created by Koyoharu Gotouge, and the new film’s English-language voice cast is led by Channing Tatum. It opened to excellent reviews, with Collider’s Jeff Ewing calling it “an action-packed, intense, dark animated outing with great visuals,” but noting that it suffers as a standalone title. You can watch the movie in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
