Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley Terrorize as Undead Lovers in Another Frankenstein Movie
The first trailer for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride has been unveiled. It sees Christian Bale’s Frankenstein finding a companion for himself in Jessie Buckley’s Bride, who is created by reviving a dead woman, thanks to Dr Euphonious. Set to be another auteur-driven addition in WB’s line-up, Gyllenhaal’s direction for this adaptation seems inspired by Bonnie and Clyde, given their killing spree amid an enticing love story.
While it’s far from the lone Frankenstein-based project to be greenlit in recent years, which involves projects from Guillermo del Toro and Radu Jude, the trailer, coupled with the talent, certainly displays promise.
The Bride Trailer Boasts Confidence Amid Frankenstein-Fueled Lineup
Speaking of the movie, Gyllenhaal, who previously helmed 2021’s The Lost Daughter, expressed that the movie will be controversial. And going by the trailer, it’s pretty evident the movie is a departure from more traditional iterations of Mary Shelley’s classic work.
However, unlike Creature Commandos, which flips the iconic tale by making the duo adversaries, the upcoming horror will still be a love story, albeit a very punk and radical one, featuring very flawed characters (via Collider).
I mean, it’s very punk. It’s very radical in some ways, and the main characters in it are very imperfect. It’s also a love story, basically. It’s about the monster in all of us.
The movie was initially seen as another risky venture on WB’s part, given its budget of $80M. But with the trailer promising an enthralling ride between Bride and Frankenstein, which seems more in line with Bonnie & Clyde, this could extend WB’s immaculate streak in horror.

As discussed before, Gyllenhaal’s punk take on the iconic tale is not the lone Frankenstein story that is being developed for the big screen. Guillermo del Toro’s own iteration of Mary Shelley’s novel will hit the theatres for a limited run ahead of the Netflix premiere. In addition to Del Toro’s version, a new movie starring Sebastian is currently being written by revered filmmaker Radu Jude, who revealed it’ll be called Frankenstein in Romania.
Gyllenhaal, in addition to directing from her own script, will be producing the feature alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman Keren. Her movie, which was originally developed for Netflix, will arrive in theatres and IMAX screens in March of next year.
