Death Stranding Live-Action Movie Will Feature Characters Who Weren’t In The Games
In addition to a Death Stranding anime movie, a live-action Death Stranding movie from director Michael Sarnoski and A24 is in the works. During the Beyond the Strand event celebrating the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions, Sarnoski and Kojima appeared on stage to share some more updates about it.
Kojima said he wanted Sarnoski to direct the movie after seeing the movies Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, both of which Sarnoski directed and Kojima enjoyed. Kojima said he thought Sarnoski would be “perfect” to make the movie.
As for Sarnoski, he said he was “terrified” by the pressure of working on such a beloved franchise, but ultimately agreed to sign on after meeting with Kojima and A24 and learning that he would be given “freedom” to make the movie he wanted to make.
Sarnoski said his aim is to “capture the soul of the game and capture the themes of the game but tell a story that you haven’t seen in that world and explore characters you haven’t seen before.”
In addition to featuring characters not seen in the games, the Death Stranding movie will be “another story that you’ve never seen in this same universe,” Sarnoski said. He said another goal is to tell a “human story” and appeal to both fans of the games and people who do not know them.
Kojima, who was reportedly asked to direct the Death Stranding movie himself, said he won’t be “involved too much” because if he were, he would “start saying a lot of things.” However, Kojima is involved as a producer, so he does have some involvement. “I trust Michael,” Kojima said.
It’s still early days for the Death Stranding movie and there is no word yet on a cast or a release date. Norman Reedus, who plays main character Sam in the Death Stranding games, has said he’s open to returning for the movie. A Death Stranding animated movie is also in the works, as part of the bigger Death Stranding universe.
As for the game series, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach came out in June, and while Kojima has ideas for Death Stranding 3, he doesn’t plan to make it himself. Kojima is also working on the games OD and Physint.
A24 is also producing the Elden Ring movie, which is being directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alex Garland. As for the Death Stranding anime, the first trailer for the movie–which has the working title Mosquito–was released during Beyond the Strand and can be seen above.
