Dwayne Johnson’s Christmas Movie Flop With 2 Marvel Stars Finds Global Streaming Success
Dwayne Johnson has given us some amazing movies, from the Jumanji franchise to Moana; the actor always brings fresh concepts to entertain fans worldwide. This year, he broke the mold of being an “action star” by giving a heartfelt performance in Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine. The actor made waves through the film festival circuit and with the critics, even generating the Oscar buzz, which certainly comes as a relief as his last few films did not make an impression. Nonetheless, one of his holiday movies that bombed at the box office has now emerged as a streaming hit.
Red One is trending globally at the 8th spot on HBO Max’s top 10 charts. The holiday movie reunited Johnson with his Jumanji director Jake Kasdan, but failed to create the same magic as the iconic franchise. It follows the North Pole’s Head of Security, Callum Drift (Johnson), who must team up with the world’s most notorious hacker, Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans), on a globe-trotting mission to find a kidnapped Santa and save Christmas.
The movie has a great cast, including Evans as Jack, JK Simmons as Santa, Lucy Liu as Zoe, Kiernan Shipka as Grýla, Bonnie Hunt as Mrs. Claus, and more. The movie was a box office flop, earning $185.9 million worldwide. But the mixed reaction to the movie is clear in its Rotten Tomatoes scores: 30% from the critics and 89% from the audience. So, no wonder as the holiday season arrives, more and more fans are revisiting the movie on streaming.
Dwayne Johnson Is Currently Filming ‘Jumanji 4’
After giving a rock-solid performance in The Smashing Machine, Johnson is returning to heartfelt adventure comedy with Jumanji 4. Filming has begun in Universal Studios Hollywood with the original cast and director hard at work. The long-awaited sequel to 2019’s hit Jumanji: The Next Level will reunite Johnson with co-stars Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black. It will also see the comeback of Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Madison Iseman, and Ser’Darius Blaine, reprising their real-world roles as the teens who first get sucked into the video game. While the plot details are scarce, fresh faces have been added to the cast, including Awkwafina, Brittany O’Grady, and Burn Gorman playing the film’s big bad.
Red One is streaming on HBO Max, while Jumanji 4 is slated for December 11, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the sequel.
