Forgotten 2010s’ Action Sci-Fi Just Lost Its Global Box Office Title to Brilliant New Horror Movie
In less than a week of release in theaters worldwide, The Conjuring: Last Rites has announced that it’s a contender for one of the top spots on the list of the highest grossing horror films. It’s already among the top 30, and is all but guaranteed to break into the top five before the end of its run. It will probably not be able to match the $700 million-plus haul generated by It, but it could challenge the $470 million that It: Chapter Two made in 2019. The Conjuring: Last Rites is also certainly going to outgross each of its predecessors in the Conjuring Universe, but before it can celebrate that achievement, it can bask in the success of having overtaken one of the least-remembered hits of the last decade or so.
Starring Aaron Eckhart, the movie Battle: Los Angeles grossed $213 million at the global box office, against a reported budget of $70 million. It was directed by Jonathan Liebesman, who’d go on to direct Wrath of the Titans and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In Battle: LA, which was essentially Independence Day meets Black Hawk Down, Eckhart played the leader of a group of soldiers tasked with protecting the city of L.A. during an alien invasion. The film was shot in the frenetic handheld style popularized by the Jason Bourne hits, but it earned terrible reviews.
Battle: LA currently sits at a 37% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Overlong and overly burdened with war movie clichés, Battle: Los Angeles will entertain only the most ardent action junkies.” The great critic Roger Ebert wrote a particularly venomous review of the movie, awarding it half a star. He called it “noisy, violent, ugly and stupid,” and wrote, “I want to rend the hair from my head and weep bitter tears of despair.” Eckhart was coming off of a prominent role in The Dark Knight, and was momentarily chosen to lead several big-budget films, such as this one, and I, Frankenstein.
‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Is Set to Emerge as Warner Bros.’ Biggest Horror Hit of 2025
The Conjuring: Last Rites, on the other hand, is poised to break records. Having generated $226 million globally so far, it’ll overtake fellow Warner Bros. horror hit Weapons this weekend, and will then set its sights on passing the $307 million lifetime haul of Final Destination Bloodlines, and the $365 million lifetime haul of Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners. You can watch the movie in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
