Netflix’s compelling synopsis for the project states: “As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity.
“With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s been seen before.”
Gundam was conceived by Yoshiyuki Tomino, and the franchise centres around giant robots, or mecha, referred to as “Mobile Suits”.
The franchise kicked off with the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam back in 1979, subsequently spawning a vast multimedia empire encompassing more than 50 TV series, films, manga, novels and video games.
The series has even captured the attention of academics in Japan, with the virtual Gundam Academy planned in 2008 to become the first educational institution founded upon an animated television series.
