Filmmaker Destry Allyn Spielberg, gearing up for her first feature film, is out to turn Hollywood on its head. The director launched her film, Please Don’t Feed the Children, at the Sitges International Film Festival in October. Per Deadline, Spielberg said she wanted to cast as many new actors in her film as she could.

“My goal was to bring in as many new faces as possible – that’s kind of my goal as a director in the future,” she said. “I want to start careers – I’m sick of seeing movies that lack young talent. There are so many young and talented actors that are not getting seen. I think this whole system is bullsh*t and I don’t understand why the industry is so exclusive. It’s silly.”

The son of Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg reveals that his father is a gamer and regularly plays Call of Duty.

The low-budget indie movie stars Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) as well as an array of actors including Zoe Colletti (Only Murders in the Building), Dean Scott Vasquez (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), Vernon Davis (Chariot), Emma Meisel (American Horror Story: 1984), Andrew Liner (Vampire Academy), Reagan Aliyah (Ironheart), and Joshua Melnick (Saint X).

The director took to Instagram to thank the Stiges Film Festival for premiering her movie:

Spielberg Used a Renowned Casting Director

Please Don’t Feed the Children is about a group of orphans traveling to the South to find a new life after a virus takes out a good portion of the adult population. The group then finds that they are at the mercy of a woman who is hiding a dark secret. The movie was written by Paul Bertino.

Spielberg, who is the child of Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, said she worked with casting director Anne McCarthy (Aquaman) to find fresh faces for the movie. “We had such a perfect movie for an ensemble with new faces so we were keen to get as many as we could. I’m so lucky to have found this cast,” Spielberg said.

It’s like The Goonies meets Children of Men.

She added that when she first read Bertino’s script for the movie she thought it would be perfect for her directorial debut. “I really enjoyed psychological movies growing up, and this film is really more of a psychological thriller than a horror. It’s like The Goonies meets Children of Men,” she said.

Already Working on Her Next Project

Spielberg also said she is in the preliminary stages of her next directing project, a murder mystery. “And there’s possibly a third project. I can’t say much, but it’s going to be great and I’m going to be busy,” she said.

Spielberg’s father, Steven, has a few things coming down the pipeline as well. He’s working on a yet-untitled UFO film based on a story by himself and collaborator David Koepp. The cast includes Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo. He is also producing Cola Wars about the feud between soda giants Coke and Pepsi in the 1980s. That movie is in the works at Sony under Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment.
