Why Former NCIS Star Lucas Black Left Big-Budget Hollywood for Uplifting Movies
By Movieguide® Contributor
Though he’s starred in some of Hollywood’s largest franchises like NCIS, Lucas Black left that life behind to focus on his family and to create content that is morally uplifting and brings life to viewers.
“I’m looking for stories that uplift, encourage and promote Christian values,” Black told the Christian Post. “They should point people to God and highlight the importance of family.”
“I pray about what God wants me to do,” he added. “He’s spoken to me to be an encourager to the body of Christ. There’s more positive that comes out of being bold about my faith than we can ever really imagine. But most of it comes from people who are in the body of Christ and believers who tell me how thankful they are that I stand up for what I believe in, I stand up for the Gospel, and I am resilient.”
“I want to point people to Christ and hopefully make an impact to win lost souls,” Black continued. “But to those who are already believers, want to encourage them to stand strong in their faith and to be bold and to edify the church.”
While Black believes Hollywood has begun to shift towards making the types of movies he supports, he cannot get over the fact that this change is profits-based rather than a genuine effort to create life-bringing movies.
“I think they see the demand, but there’s still a deliberate agenda they want to push,” he explained. “My hope is that they will change, but I’m not sure if they really care about the dollar as much as their agendas.”
“For us that are watching these films. I want you guys to be aware of that. As hard as it may be, we may have to choose to turn the channel or not watch a certain movie because… certain agendas that they are trying to push,” Black continued. “But I think if [these projects] flunk and they start losing lots of dollars, there might be a change, but I don’t know.”
As for now, Black is content working with explicitly Christian studios that are pushing the Gospel through their movies. He plays a supporting role in the upcoming UNSUNG HERO.
Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:
UNSUNG HERO is a powerful, compelling story of faith and family, told with lots of sincerity and heart. The acting and writing is very good and convincing. UNSUNG HERO has a strong Christian, biblical worldview. The family’s Christian faith is not only clear from their repeated prayers to Jesus to guide and provide for them, but also from their infectious enthusiasm and spiritually uplifting song lyrics.
“I’m married, I have three kids and, you know, my character’s a churchgoer, and, so am I — so, you know, trying to be a man of God, live by faith and be there for the relationships, be present, for my wife and my kids,” he told Fox News of his role in the movie. “And, you know, Jed seems like the person that was the same way. He, in the script, he’s wanting to do good and help the community and be the man that God’s called him to be.”
“This is a story that Americans are hungry for,” Black added. “We need more wholesome content like this. This is a story about family and faith. The Smallbone family, when they came over here, faced adversity. They had to stick together as a family to make ends meet, and they took a leap of faith in doing so.”
Movieguide® previously reported:
Actor Lucas Black, best known for his role in FAST & FURIOUS and NCIS, recently opened up about how he fought for truth in a hostile Hollywood landscape.
The Christian actor left the popular show NCIS: NEW ORLEANS in 2019 after he felt like they attacked what he believed.
“The Holy Spirit was nudging me to speak up at some of the things that were trying to be implemented on the show, to really fight for what is true,” Black said on a recent episode of THE PRODIGAL STORIES PODCAST. “Some of the Hollywood agendas, the attack on the family or the attack on law enforcement … to really step up and try to be a voice to really fight against that agenda.”
