Saoirse Ronan has revealed that she had to learn how to birth lambs for her new film as she spoke about this very different type of acting challenge.
The Hollywood star, 30, has revealed that while on the set for The Outrun, a new film based on an award-winning memoir from Amy Liptrot, she faced her ‘biggest acting challenges’ yet.
In the film directed by Nora Fingscheid, the Little Women and Ladybird star plays a young woman who returns to her family home in the Orkney Islands to deal with her past and addictions.
The star revealed that in part of the film the star had to assist sheep as they gave birth, but this was something that was impossible to fake for the camera.
‘Oh I was lambing,’ she said ‘I don’t think you can fake that as you’ll see from the film.’
She then revealed to BBC News this was a stressful type of challenge as lambs appear to be ‘dead’ when they are first born.
‘When you pull a lamb out at first, they look like they’re dead,’ she explained.
‘They are pretty lifeless and the first time you do it you are worried you will hurt them, but you do have to be quite rough.’
‘After I got the first one out of the way I felt a bit more confident but to have to keep that mask of confidence over my face while inside I was completely terrified was probably one of the biggest acting challenges I’ve ever faced.’
Putting herself into uncomfortable positions for the sake of her work is nothing new to the actress who has previously revealed that she does her own stunts.
In an interview with Vogue, the actress was asked about her hardest stunt, she replied: ‘Probably being strapped to the bottom of a truck in the Sahara Desert for an hour.’
She also previously told Glamour that she did all of her stunts for the movie Hanna when she was just 12.
‘I did all of ’em. I trained beforehand in the gym and in martial arts,’ she said.
That said, when asked by Glamour about her iconic leap out of a moving car in Ladybird, the star revealed it was ever so slightly less dangerous than it looked.
‘I’d love to say I did a drop and roll onto the freeway, but I didn’t. The car was set into this rake that was raised up off the ground and that was being pulled by a small tow truck that the camera crew and Greta were on.
‘So I could just open the door, and I basically ducked out of frame. You didn’t have to see anything else!’
The Outrun is set to be released on 27 September, 2024.
