NETFLIX film crews have been spotted filming scenes in a historic Scots landmark for the new hotly-anticipated reboot of Frankenstein.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is in the midst of bringing his new movie creation to life and one iconic Scots cathedral will serve as the backdrop for scenes in the fresh take on Mary Shelley’s classic novel.

Glasgow Cathedral has closed its doors to accommodate the massive production, and on Friday production crews took it over.

The medieval landmark, a top tourist spot with over 500,000 visitors each year, is situated in the heart of Glasgow and has been a silent witness to countless moments in Scotland‘s storied past.

Del Toro, known for his unique storytelling and dark fantasy elements, is both writing and directing the film.

“Prodigal Father” is understood to be the working title of the horror movie, starring Oscar Issac as mad scientist Victor Frankenstein.

Hollywood A-listers like Jacob Elordi, Christoph Waltz and Mia Goth will also star in the classic retelling.

According to What’s On Netflix, del Toro’s adaptation will be “set in Eastern Europe in the 19th Century, the story of Dr. Pretorious, who needs to track down Frankenstein’s monster- who is believed to have died in a fire 40 years before–in order to continue the experiments of Dr. Frankenstein.”

With film crews rolling cameras at Glasgow Cathedral, a spokesperson for the Church of Scotland said: “The current Church of Scotland congregation within the Cathedral is always mindful of its importance as a sacred space to a number of Christian traditions and will ensure that all filming within the building is sensitive to its continuing role as a place of worship and spiritual reflection.

“Glasgow Cathedral remains a place of pilgrimage, as well as of great historical importance as the only Scottish medieval cathedral to have survived the Reformation largely intact.

“As such, it attracts between 500,000 and 600,000 visitors annually, but we welcome opportunities such as this to help raise the Cathedral’s profile internationally and attract more people to share the experience of a visit to this very special place.”

Filming will also take place in Edinburgh come September.

Locals were sent letters in June which suggested that parts of the city like Canongate, Bakerhouse Close and Makar’s Court will be “transformed into 1850s Edinburgh”, complete with carriages, carts and actors in period costume.

It comes after del Toro revealed that he was staying in a 200-year-old “haunted” Scots mansion while he filmed scenes for the movie up north earlier this week.

The director was staying at Dunecht House on the outskirts of Aberdeen.

The Victorian property has 24 bedrooms and in his update he told horror fans he was staying in the “most haunted room” of an “old 1800s hotel”.

He said: “I love Scotland – and, even when my links to it are not by bloodline, I feel close to it.”

In a post on Twitter/ X, del Toro wrote: “Whilst in Aberdeen, I am staying in an old 1800s hotel.

“I am in the Most Haunted room of it- which was vacated this morning by one of our producers.

“Odd electrical and physical occurrences scared her into leaving asap.
