June 11, 20242 Mins Read

The 2024 Locarno Film Festival will honor veteran indie producer Stacey Sher, whose credits include Erin Brockovich, Gattaca and Django Unchained, with this year’s Premio Raimondo Rezzonico, or best independent producer, Award. The prize celebrates “outstanding personalities who have made major contributions to international film production.”

Together with Danny DeVito and Michael Shamberg at Jersey Films, Sher helped kick-start the 90s era of U.S. indie filmmaking, producing groundbreaking hits including Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty, Gattaca, and Out of Sight. She is arguably best known for her work with Quentin Tarantino, also producing The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained, and with Steven Soderbergh, with whom she produced such hits as Out of Sight and Oscar-winner Erin Brockovich. Her more recent credits include Liesl Tommy’s Aretha Franklin biopic Respect and the AMC series Into the Badlands.

Stacey Sher‘s work has profoundly reshaped our collective notions of independent cinema,” said Giona A. Nazzaro, Artistic Director of Locarno. “The 1990s were marked indelibly by her producer’s acumen and vision, giving rise to some of the most iconic American films through her stewardship.”

Sher will receive the Rezzonico Award at a ceremony at Locarno’s Piazza Grande on August 8th. The festival will also screen Erin Brockovich and Django Unchained in tribute.
