Margot Robbie’s latest Hollywood project has been announced, with her production company, LuckyChap, set to partner with Hasbro to create a movie based on the board game Monopoly.

Following the billion-dollar success of Barbie, her production company announced it will kickstart plans to make a Monopoly movie, alongside Lionsgate.

Adam Fogelson, the chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said the Hollywood entertainment company is looking forward to working with LuckyChap, a company that aims to “expand what female stories and female storytellers could do”.

“I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap,” Fogelson said in a statement to media.

“They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join Monopoly with a clear point of view.

“We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster.”

LuckyChap said they are thrilled with the opportunity to bring the international board game to life through a Hollywood blockbuster.

“Monopoly is top property – pun fully intended,” its statement read.

“This game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”

Zev Foreman, the head of film for Hasbro Entertainment, said the Hasbro board game has an abundance of opportunities for storytelling.

“As one of the most iconic games in the world, Monopoly provides an incredible platform for storytelling opportunities,” he said.

“We are thrilled to have the unique vision of LuckyChap and Lionsgate alongside us to bring this historic piece of popular culture to the big screen.”

Earlier this year, LuckyChap announced it will be producing a film based on the video game franchise, Sims.

Last year was a successful year for Margot Robbie’s production company. Its Hollywood blockbuster film, Barbie, grossed $1.45 billion USD ($2.23 billion AUD) globally.

Saltburn was another successful film produced by LuckyChap. The film, starring Jacob Elordi and Barry Keoghan, made $21.1 million USD ($32.42 million AUD) at the global box office.

Barbie at the Oscars

There was global outrage in the lead up to the 2024 Oscars, when Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and produced by her company, missed out on several key nominations.

Director Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director and the movie’s heroine, Margot Robbie, also missed out on a Best Actress in Leading Role nomination.

Meanwhile, the movie’s male lead, Ryan Gosling was nominated for Best Actor in Supporting Role.

Following the nomination snubs for Gerwig and Robbie, Gosling released a statement expressing his disappointment.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film,” he said.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

Barbie walked away with just one Oscar at the end of the night: the Oscar for Best Song with Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For?
