Netflix’s Best New Movie Is Criminally Underrated And Deserved Better

February 27, 20253 Mins Read

Netflix has been adding some decent movies to its licensed catalogue these days, but none are better than what has just debuted on the service, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a film that may not have seemed like anything special during its marketing phase, but since release it has become a cult classic that has fans (and its cast) dying for a sequel.

Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy comedy starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant and Justice Smith among others. It assigns each of them into various, traditional classes with Pine being the bard, and the group plans an epic heist to grab a lost relic. Again, I promise it’s better than it may sound, and the concept is far less generic and way more funny than you might imagine.

The film reviewed great. It had a 91% across 300+ critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 92% among fans. The problem was the box office. It made $205 million globally which may sound pretty good on the surface, but Dungeons and Dragons cost around $151 million, and when you add in marketing in distribution costs, it very likely lost money. Some estimates say $180 million or so.

For those who have seen it, this is kind of maddening as it’s exactly the kind of original, creative movie you’d love to see expand with a sequel or even a trilogy or more. It’s hilarious, the cast has great chemistry, and there are unlimited storylines you could make for a movie like this. Chris Pine has previously commented on the prospect of a sequel:

“Yeah, absolutely,” Pine answered. “Again, this is inside baseball. The film did fine, but it didn’t do fine enough. That was the breaks in our business. For these films to do well, you have to make a billion, which is a lot. I think there’s a really good chance that we’ll make another one, because I think Hasbro owns the rights to it. I think there’s a good chance, and if they could figure out a financial way to make it work, I think they’ll do it.”

One way this could be nudged into happening is a stellar performance on Netflix to indicate a desire for a sequel. In this age of streaming who knows, it may be something Netflix could even make itself. Lord knows it has the money to throw around. Interestingly Netflix is making a live action Dungeons and Dragons show, but there is no indication this cast is returning and it seems to be something else all together. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has debuted at #2 on the service behind Venom: The Last Dance, and this is an open call to watch it if you haven’t or rewatch it so it can gain traction for a possible follow-up.
