‘The Legend of Zelda’ live-action movie find its Link and Zelda

It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this “Legend of Zelda” movie news.

The two lead roles have been cast in the upcoming live-action film based on the “Legend of Zelda” video game franchise, Nintendo announced on Wednesday, July 16.

The role of Link will be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, while Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason. In “Zelda” video games, Link is generally the main character, who sets out to save the kingdom of Hyrule from the evil Ganon, though in some instances gamers have played as of Princess Zelda.

Ainsworth previously starred as Miles Wingrave on Netflix’s “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and voiced Pinocchio opposite Tom Hanks in Disney’s 2022 live-action version of “Pinocchio.” Bragason, meanwhile, has starred in shows like Disney+ series “Renegade Nell” and British drama “The Jetty.”

Both casting choices are lesser known actors compared to some of the names that had been suggested by fans. In particular, “Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer was a popular suggestion to play Zelda.

The “Legend of Zelda” movie will be the next major Nintendo video game to be turned into a feature film after the rousing success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed over $1.3 billion at the global box office and was the second highest-grossing film of 2023 after “Barbie.” A sequel to the “Mario” film is also the way and set for release in 2026.

But while “Mario” was animated, the “Zelda” movie will be live-action. Wes Ball, who helmed three “Maze Runner” movies and 2024’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” is directing “The Legend of Zelda.” It’s a longtime passion project for the filmmaker, who has been on record as wanting to make it for more than 15 years. In a 2010 post on X, Ball wrote, “Since I could never even hope to have the chance to direct it … the next big (motion capture) ‘Avatar’-like movie should be … THE LEGEND OF ZELDA.”
