New on Disney+ August 7: Howard

Any Disney fan — or pop-culture fan, really — knows the soundtracks to legendary films like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, but not many know the man behind the beautiful words: Howard Ashman. But now viewers can learn the tale as old as time through Howard, the documentary about the late, great lyricist that is new on Disney+ this weekend. Through archival footage and interviews with his former colleagues, friends and family, director and veteran Disney producer Don Hahn (The Lion King) deftly tells the intimate story of Ashman from his humble beginnings in Baltimore to his start on Broadway and his eventual meteoric rise with his musical partner, Alan Menken. This biography is far from being Disneyfied, as it honestly depicts the highs and lows of Ashman’s relationships and his eventual defeat against AIDS. Every Disney lover should watch Howard, and we are thankful to know that while his legacy has never been forgotten, his story is finally being shared with the world.
