ALEXANDRIA, VA — Drive-in movies have emerged as an entertainment alternative during the pandemic, and Alexandria is joining the party. The city’s drive-in movie series will kick off on Aug. 29 through Oct. 3.
Hosted by ALX Community and The Garden, the series will feature classic and family movies over six Saturdays. The drive-in location at 5001 Eisenhower Avenue can accommodate up to 215 cars per movie. The makeshift drive-in theater is located in a parking lot connected to commercial space owned by developer and event partner Stonebridge.
“I have some of my favorite memories going to the old Skyline Theaters and seeing everything I could,” said Allen Brooks, chief operating officer of The Garden. “During this pandemic, we want to be able to bring an opportunity to gather again and experience the joy of watching some of the classics and contemporary favorites. We at The Garden are so excited to partner with ALX Community and bring movies to Alexandria during these distant times.”
Tickets are $30 per car and will benefit Alexandria-based charities ACT for Alexandria and Athena Rapid Response. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and movies start at 8:30 p.m.
The event will also support food vendors that have been financially impacted by the pandemic. Curbside Kitchen will provide rotating food truck options, like Chewish Deli, Gemma Gelato, Capital Chicken & Waffles and Bangkok with mobile ordering available. Attendees may also bring their own food.
