Jim Carrey Could Bring ‘The Jetsons’ to Life in New Live-Action Movie From ‘Jurassic World’ Director
Jim Carrey may soon be rocking flying cars and robot maids.
The comedian, 63, is reportedly in talks to play George Jetson in a live-action adaptation of The Jetsons — with Jurassic Worlddirector Colin Trevorrow in negotiations to helm the long-awaited project at Warner Bros. Pictures, according to Variety.
While no deals are finalized as of yet, the prospect of Carrey stepping into the futuristic world of Orbit City has fans buzzing.
“My heart skipped a beat,” one fan wrote on social media alongside an announcement of the news.
“Perfect casting! That would be an awesome movie,” another wrote before referencing another Carrey classic. “Giving me Bruce almighty vibes.”
One fan commented: “Finally! I’ve wanted a Jetson’s live action movie for years!!!”
Another also made references to past Carrey films: “Now let’s do The Mask 2 (and bring back Cameron Diaz @camerondiaz ) and The Grinch 2 (with a now adult Cindy Who Lou @taylormomsen ) already!” they wrote.
What to Expect
Trevorrow and Joe Epstein are also in talks to co-write the script, a move that hints at a balance of spectacle and heart when paired with Carrey’s blend of slapstick and soul.
First debuting in 1962, The Jetsons was a technicolor time capsule, imagining a family of the future that still faced everyday problems — just with more buttons and robots involved.
The animated series followed George and Jane Jetson, their kids Judy and Elroy, family dog Astro, and their wisecracking robotic maid, Rosie. It was the first ABC show ever broadcast in color, and it quickly became a cultural touchstone, later revived in 1985 and adapted into the 1990 animated film Jetsons: The Movie.
Carrey’s career spans classics like The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He most recently played Dr. Robotnik in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise — which crossed the billion-dollar mark in global box office receipts.
It goes without saying that The Jetsons would mark a full-circle return to the kind of comedy that made Carrey a household name.
Trevorrow has also proven himself a master of reboots and nostalgia, having relaunched Jurassic World in 2015 and followed it up with Jurassic World: Dominion in 2022.
If the project moves forward, it will be the latest in a decades-long effort to bring the Jetsons’ world to life. It’s seen multiple scrapped attempts, from a 2003 Adam Shankman version to a 2007 CGI concept from Robert Rodriguez.
But with Carrey’s comedic chops, Warner Bros. may finally have the perfect ingredient to send The Jetsons into orbit.
