Best Movies Streaming on AMC+ & Shudder

Arcadian

Read Our Review

Nicolas Cage is the star of not one, but two separate horror movies this year. Arcadian is one of them. An apocalyptic tale, Arcadian sees Cage donning the role of a single father of two, as his family attempts to survive a world fraught with monstrous horrors and grotesque creatures. Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins co-star alongside Cage, lending some additional weight to this chilling thriller.

Straight to the Point

Arcadian is a fantastic example of a horror film that knows exactly what it’s trying to accomplish. Though its plot isn’t anything to write home about, its fun effects, palpable tension, and competent performances make for a straightforward horror film that truly excels. It’s a fun creature feature in a sea of other impressive creature features from the past few years, especially when you see just how wild some of their designs are.

Exhuma

Read Our Review

Nothing broadens the mind as much as traveling the world does, and in the world of cinema, you can learn a lot from what other countries find absolutely terrifying. Take Exhuma for example, a South Korean horror film joining Shudder. Directed by Jang Jae-hyun, Exhuma is a supernatural horror film that sees a mysterious curse afflicting a family, leading them to investigate an ancestral gravesite. However, when the remains within the grave are subsequently relocated, Hell quickly breaks loose. Choi Min-sik (Oldboy), Kim Go-eun (Monster), and Yoo Hae-jin (A Taxi Driver) star in this terrifying tale of spiritual revenge.

One of the Highest Grossing South Korean Films

As of writing, this terrifying South Korean horror film is one of the highest-grossing South Korean films ever made, while doubling as the single highest grossing South Korean movie of 2024. Like Jang Jae-hyun’s previous film, Svaha: The Sixth Finger, Exhumed combines slow-burn tension with additional focus on the supernatural, complete with a stellar lead performance from the incredible Choi Min-sik. Along with the scares and the unique ghosts found throughout, there’s a palpable mystery to uncover that’s sure to scratch a familiar itch.

Stopmotion

Read Our Review

After originally debuting in late 2023, Stopmotion has finally hit streaming. It’s only appropriate that it heads straight to Shudder, considering what it’s about. The first feature-length film by director Robert Morgan, Stopmotion is an adult-animated film that follows Ella Blake (Aisling Franciosi), the daughter of an esteemed stop-motion animator. After the sudden death of her mother, Ella attempts to vent her personal demons by finishing her mother’s last film. However, she’ll come to find that her film eventually takes on a life of its own.

Animated Terror

Adult animation has always gotten the short end of the stick, but thankfully, due to films like Mad God and Stopmotion, there’s been a growing appreciation for the medium. Much like Mad God, Stopmotion utilizes the medium to its fullest extent, amplifying the grotesque and the unnerving with some surprising scenes and creative ingenuity. Aisling Franciosi also does a stellar job here, having previously led The Nightingale and Last Voyage of the Demeter. During its film festival run, Stopmotion would win Best Director at the 2023 Fantastic Fest.

Late Night With the Devil (2023)

Read Our Review

One of Shudder’s newest exclusives is a particularly intriguing international co-production. Co-directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes, Late Night with the Devil takes place on Halloween night circa 1977, featuring a business-savvy talk show host named Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian) trying a daring experiment. In a bid for higher viewership, Delroy puts on an occult-themed special with plenty of supernatural intrigue. However, tampering with the souls of the dead may have horrible consequences for not just Delroy, but his audience nationwide. Laura Gordon, Ian Bliss, and Fayssal Bazzi co-star in this terrifying tale alongside Dastmalchian.

A Thrilling Tale of Late Night Terror

Despite facing some minor controversy due to the use of AI in the film’s production, Late Night with the Devil shines as both a period piece and as a legitimate fright-fest. Beyond being your typical found-footage film, Late Night with the Devil utilizes its staging as a live performance along with traditional filming techniques in order to balance genuine misery with some lighter moments. At only a little over 90 minutes, Late Night with the Devil does all it can to wring every unique idea out of its premise before coming to a surprising conclusion. It’s certainly a refreshing horror film if you’re aching for something a little different. Be sure to check out the trailer for Late Night with the Devil below:

The Instigators

Read Our Review

Doug Liman, the talented director behind the Road House remake as well as The Bourne Identity, has officially jumped onto Apple TV+ with a hilarious heist comedy. The Instigators follows what happens when a typical robbery goes terribly awry, pairing two runaway thieves — Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) — with a terrified therapist (Hong Chau) in the streets of Boston. Unfortunately, these crooks will discover that just about every step in their aimless escape plan is falling apart. An impressive supporting cast features the likes of Jack Harlow, Ron Perlman, Alfred Molina, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Instigate Your Excitement

If you’ve ever wanted to see Doug Liman’s sense of style in the heist genre, it’s safe to say that The Instigators is a perfect film for you. Matt Damon is impressive as always, and Casey Affleck forms a fitting and compelling partner for their shenanigans on-screen. Their comedic chemistry thankfully makes up for their individual weaknesses here. It’s a simple movie, but it’s aware of its own limitations, making for the perfect kind of easy-viewing comedy that doesn’t require too much commitment.

Fancy Dance

Read Our Review

Erica Tremblay, having previously worked on projects like AMC’s Dark Winds, makes her feature-length directorial debut with Fancy Dance, a surprising standout film from Apple TV+. This bittersweet drama follows what happens when a caring woman, Jax, attempts to find her missing sister with her niece, Roki, during their journey to Oklahoma City. Lily Gladstone and Isabel DeRoy-Olson co-star as Jax and Roki, respectively.

A Fantastic Drama

With a score by Samantha Crain (Reservation Dogs, Echo) and fantastic performances by Lily Gladstone and Isabel DeRoy-Olson, Fancy Dance is a fantastic drama that melds compelling relationships with superb editing and pacing. It’s a film whose subject is treated with a level of beauty and respect that you can’t help but appreciate, and its ending is sure to stick with you long after the credits roll.

Napoleon (2023)

Read Our Review

The latest project by Ridley Scott is one filled with his technical passion. Napoleon is a grandiose historical epic directed by Scott and written by David Scarpa, telling an abridged biography of Napoleon Bonaparte’s life in addition to his relationship with his wife, Joséphine. Some of Napoleon’s most immense battles are brought to life on the big screen, all while political tensions back home threaten his globe-spanning conquest. Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby co-star as Napoleon Bonaparte and Joséphine Bonaparte, respectively, with additional performances provided by Tahar Rahim, Rupert Everett, Ben Miles, Ludivine Sagnier, and Matthew Needham.

An Incredible Display of Production Design

In addition to earning nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design at the Academy Awards, Napoleon is a marvelous feast for the senses. Though Napoleon‘s historical accuracy is “questionable” at points, to put things lightly, the surrounding film is more than serviceable as a feature-length highlight reel for one of history’s most prominent figures. It’s a film you’ll appreciate more for its incredible technical qualities and immense scope than for its weaker elements, though individual moments do shine through in its gargantuan runtime. For a quick glimpse at Napoleon, be sure to check out the film’s trailer below:

Killers of the Flower Moon

Read Our Review

Martin Scorsese is back with Killers of the Flower Moon, and after making a big splash at the box office, it’s finally available on streaming. A period drama based on David Grann’s titular book, Killers of the Flower Moon takes place in 1920s Oklahoma, centered around the discovery of oil in the middle of the Osage Nation. Unfortunately, greed and malice collide as competing interests set their sights on the oil underneath the soil, with bodies piling up at a concerning rate. When the Bureau of Investigation gets involved, things will only intensify further.

Martin Scorsese Returns With a Triumph

A deviation from Scorsese’s typical crime stories, Killers of the Flower Moon paints an all-encompassing picture of one of the most gratuitous crimes in American history. Its extensive cast, comprised of frequent Scorsese collaborators like Leonardo DiCaprio and established names like Tantoo Cardinal, lend this epic Western drama some appropriate credence alongside its authentic Oklahoma setting. With a stunning soundscape provided by the late Robbie Robertson, the last collaboration between him and Scorsese, Killers of the Flower Moon successfully returned Scorsese to the spotlight. Now, you can catch his latest crime epic from the comfort of your couch cushions.

If

Read Our Review

Ryan Reynolds is just about everywhere nowadays. But have you seen him in a world full of imaginary critters? IF, written and directed by John Krasinski, sees Reynolds co-starring alongside Cailey Fleming as unconventional friends who share a special gift. When a young girl (Fleming) is able to see everyone’s imaginary friends, she teams up with an older gentleman (Reynolds) in order to return them to brand-new children. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell, and Fiona Shaw co-star.

Fun for the Whole Family

A stark departure from Krasinski’s other major films so far, IF is as colorful as it is entertaining. A talented voice cast, including the likes of Emily Blunt, Awkwafina, Bradley Cooper, and more, bring these colorful imaginary friends to life, with Reynolds and Fleming playing off of each other in a way that feels both natural and compelling. Though critical reviews were mixed overall, IF‘s charming production values make for a movie that’ll entertain just about everyone. This is especially true when you look at how well it’s doing on streaming.

Bob Marley: One Love

Read Our Review

Musical biopics are as plentiful as they are varied, but the latest (and greatest) from the genre has recently debuted on Paramount+. Enter Bob Marley: One Love, with Kingsley Ben-Adir playing the famed reggae musician. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men, Joe Bell), Bob Marley: One Love follows Marley from his humble beginnings in the mid 1970s until his tragic death in the early 1980s, chronicling the creation of the titular song as well as his involvement in the wider reggae and Rastafarian movements. Lashana Lynch and James Norton co-star as Rita Marley and Chris Blackwell, respectively.

You’ll Love Bob Marley: One Love

Aside from featuring the musical stylings of one of music’s most recognizable artists, Kingsley Ben-Adir is practically a spitting image of the late Bob Marley. He, along with the film’s greater themes of love and peace, are a refreshing change of pace compared to the typical rise and fall format you’d come to expect from musical biopics. Aside from being essential viewing for any fan of Bob Marley’s work, One Love paints a terrific portrait of Marley with an infectiously memorable score.

The Bikeriders

Read Our Review

The Bikeriders comes to Peacock via the talented mind of Jeff Nichols, an acclaimed independent director whose focus on character-driven storytelling makes for incredible drama. Taking after the photobook of the same name by Danny Lyon, The Bikeriders follows the day-to-day operations of the Vandals Motorcycle Club and the outside forces drawn to its leather-clad members. Though the club starts as a simple social gathering, a seedy underbelly forming in the shadows may force its newest member, Benny (Austin Butler), to pick a side.

Burning Rubber (And Leather)

An understated release compared to what else has debuted in 2024 so far, The Bikeriders is still a worthy film to check out if you’re at all interested. It doesn’t romanticize biker culture; rather, it deconstructs it. Austin Butler does an excellent job in portraying a man caught between two distinct worlds, and when paired with surrounding performances by Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy, what you get is an engaging journey through countercultural movements and explorations of masculinity. Even Norman Reedus makes an appearance here, if you need some more convincing.

Abigail

Read Our Review

Abigail is exactly what its accompanying trailer promises, though that’s not necessarily a bad thing. A group of specialized criminal kidnappers steal a young ballet dancer from her extravagant millionaire father, with the group holding her hostage inside the luxurious Wilhelm Manor. Unfortunately, the kidnapped child in question is harboring a dark secret: she’s a terrifying vampire. Now trapped in the manor with no means of escape, the group enters a tense fight for survival against a supernatural force.

Battling a Childish Vampire

Combining an impressive ensemble cast with a premise that’s as silly as it is horrifying makes for a fun horror film. Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, and Giancarlo Esposito are just a handful of names attached to Abigail, and their individual performances form a movie that wraps you into its plot with some genuine craft. The relationship formed between Melissa Barrera and Alisha Weir gives the chaos an emotional core as well, with an ending that’s as bittersweet as it is satisfactory.

Kung Fu Panda 4

Read Our Review

Po is back once more in Kung Fu Panda 4, albeit with a brand-new challenge to face. Po (Jack Black) is now faced with becoming a spiritual leader in the Valley of Peace, meaning he’ll have to transfer the title of Dragon Warrior to a deserving successor. On top of this, the arrival of a mysterious sorceress threatens to unravel the peace Po has worked so hard to maintain, with villains new and old alike returning to wreak havoc.

Another Success for DreamWorks

Grossing an impressive $545 million at the box office, Kung Fu Panda 4 is both a fitting conclusion to Po’s journey and an excellent standalone story as well. Jack Black and the numerous returning cast members, including Ian McShane and Bryan Cranston, bring the film’s fantastic characters to life with some stunning animation to boot. It’s easily the best-looking entry in the Kung Fu Panda franchise to date, and it’s certain to be a hit with both kids and adults alike when it comes time for movie night.

Monkey Man

Read Our Review

Dev Patel’s auteur project Monkey Man has finally hit streaming. Set in India, Monkey Man follows Kid (Patel), a struggling man who makes a meager living as a masked fighter in an underground fight club. Eager to get revenge on the man who destroyed his life many years ago, Kid attempts to climb the rungs of the underworld ladder via underhanded tactics and cunning plots. Patel stars alongside Sharlto Copely, Pitobash Tripathy, and Vipin Sharma.

Dev Patel’s Incredible Action Thriller

If you originally missed out on the hype surrounding this intense action-thriller, you really ought to see it when you can. This stylish thriller has plenty of crunchy action, intense effects, and a unique setting that allows its prominent themes to freely flow through the accompanying narrative. Add to that the talented stunt work by Patel, who injured himself on more than one occasion during the production, and you have a unique action film that’s sure to satisfy fans of John Wick and other prominent franchises.

Drive-Away Dolls (2024)

Read Our Review

Ethan Coen of the Coen brothers came out with a surprising film this year, and it’s in a genre you wouldn’t necessarily expect. The 2024 road trip comedy Drive-Away Dolls sees Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan co-starring as Jamie and Marian, respectively, on an interesting trek across the United States. After a harsh breakup sees the two friends winding up together once again, their impromptu journey to Tallahassee is fraught with a murderous case of mistaken identity. Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, and Matt Damon co-star alongside Viswanathan and Qualley.

Carried by Qualley and Viswanathan

Any road trip comedy worth its salt is carried by its lead performances, and suffice to say, Drive-Away Dolls is easily carried by its two leads. Their charisma and comedic timing allow for this sub-90 minute feature to come to a brisk conclusion. Drawing parallels to the numerous films directed by both of the Coens throughout their expansive filmography, Drive-Away Dolls also injects its own unique style independent of those previous projects, no doubt due to the involvement of Tricia Cooke in the writing department. Though reviews have been mixed overall, many have noted the film’s effectiveness as a raunchy comedy as its biggest draw. Be sure to check out our exclusive interview with Geraldine Viswanathan and Beanie Feldstein below:

Oppenheimer

Read Our Review

If you somehow missed one of the single biggest films of 2023, don’t worry: Oppenheimer is finally available on streaming. The latest and greatest by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is a focused biopic about what is arguably one of the most intriguing faces of World War II: J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is portrayed by Cillian Murphy here. The film follows the career of Oppenheimer, ranging from his initial studies, to his involvement with the Manhattan Project, to his ultimate downfall. Emily Blunt and Matt Damon co-star as his wife, Kitty, and as the director of the Manhattan Project, Leslie Groves, respectively.

What can be said about Oppenheimer that hasn’t been said already? It’s a film whose impressive cinematography, emphasis on practical effects, and terrific casting catapulted it to the top of 2023’s most popular films. This is doubly true based on its Academy Award performance, not only being the film to receive 13 nominations across all categories, but ultimately going on to win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor. Suffice to say, its positive qualities made it an incredible watch, cementing it as one of the most acclaimed films of 2023. Watch the trailer for Oppenheimer below:

Best Movies Streaming on Netflix

Daughters (2024)

Hitting the scene with a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, Netflix’s Daughters is easily one of the streamer’s best documentaries of the year. This emotional story, co-directed by Angela Patton and Natalie Rae, follows an experimental program known as “Date With Dad”, one that allows young children to briefly reconnect with their incarcerated fathers in a special father-daughter dance. Though the brief time they spend together will melt your heart, the film’s greater examination of incarceration and its impact on the family unit will have you reaching for the tissue box.

A Heart-Melting Documentary

Not much can be said about Daughters that captures its incredible storytelling. Beyond just providing a fascinating look at an empathetic subject, Daughters opens the door to a welcoming exploration of family dynamics, offering an equal dose of hope and heartrending sadness. Still, underneath the waterworks lies something truly worth seeing, a product of a wider movement to help young girls everywhere.

They Shot the Piano Player

Read Our Review

Though Netflix’s reputation for adult animation is as excellent as it is fickle, you can still find some incredible projects floating throughout this streamer’s release schedule. Cast in point, They Shot the Piano Player, an animated docudrama that originally released in late 2023. Based on the real-life disappearance of a prominent Brazilian pianist, this film sees Jeff Goldblum donning the role as Jeff Harris, a traveling musical journalist who aims to discover the true origins of bossa nova — a type of samba that originated in Brazil.

An Animated Jeff Goldblum Tale

Featuring a beautiful art style along with co-direction by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, They Shot the Piano Player hides its interesting examination of a real story under a fascinating title. A comforting jazz soundtrack accompanies the film, playing out like a colorful documentary instead of something more fantastical. It’s a polarizing film to some, but it’s one that’ll surely entertain those who can appreciate its experimental formatting.

Land of Bad

Read Our Review

William Eubank, director of the incredibly stylish science fiction thriller The Signal, is back with a movie that’s more decidedly grounded in reality. Land of Bad pairs Liam and Luke Hemsworth with Russell Crowe in a war-themed race against time. When a routine military operation goes terribly wrong, a lone drone pilot, Reaper (Crowe), has only two days to spearhead a dangerous rescue mission with little more than his high-tech drone available. David Frigerio co-authored the screenplay along with William Eubank, having previously collaborated with Eubank on The Signal.

A Constant Stream of Action

Land of Bad is a refreshing return to straightforward action films. Drawing some surface-level parallels to Black Hawk Down, Land of Bad pairs gritty spectacle with the acting talents of Russell Crowe, who has been on a roll for the past few years. Along with this year’s Sleeping Dogs and last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist, he brings an equal amount of entertaining antics and surprising depth to his performance, even though he’s sequestered away from all the violent action. Though its title may not exactly inspire confidence, what you’ll find in Land of Bad is a competent survival thriller that packs plenty of visceral violence into its modest runtime.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Read Our Review

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire takes the Ghostbusters franchise to the next level following the release of 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Set three years after the previous film, Frozen Empire sees the next generation of Ghostbusters teaming up with Venkman, Stantz, and Zeddemore as the streets of New York are flooded with bone-chilling ghosts. Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and Finn Wolfhard reprise their roles from Afterlife, with Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson returning to their classic characters once more.

A Legacy Sequel Done Right

A celebration of Ghostbusters‘ 40th anniversary, Frozen Empire hits all the bases when it comes to delivering fan service. Jason Reitman returned from Afterlife to pen the screenplay with director Gil Kenan, not only expanding upon the foundation laid out by the previous film, but incorporating some brand-new ghosts and ghostbusting tech as well. Plus, aside from featuring the returning cast of the classic films, it effectively passes the torch onto a new set of ghost-fighting heroes for the next generation.

The Teachers’ Lounge

A fantastic German film from last year has picked up a lot of steam after hitting Netflix. The Teachers’ Lounge is a tense drama film focused around Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch), a new teacher who is given an impossible mission. Facing pressure from those around her, she’s tasked with identifying someone responsible for stealing precious items from the titular teachers’ lounge.

An Academy Award Nominee

This international production would go on to secure a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards. Filled with plenty of ambiguity and a surprising level of anxiety, The Teachers’ Lounge joins other moral dilemma films in recent memory, forcing the audience to examine their own preconceptions as well as the scant evidence that’s revealed on-screen. It’s a thrilling watch if you’re completely invested, with Leonie Benesch perfectly conveying the sense of being pulled in all directions.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

Read Our Review

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F comes a timely 30 years after Beverly Hills Cop III, which was previously believed to be the end of the franchise. Director Mark Molloy’s feature-length debut sees Eddie Murphy reprising the role of Axel Foley, a rugged cop who is pressured into retirement after a routine chase goes awry. However, after failing to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Axel heads to Beverly Hills in order to investigate a threat to her safety. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, Judge Reinhold, and more make up the cast of this Netflix-exclusive legacy sequel.

Axel Foley Is Back

Amid a wider trend of legacy sequels, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F manages to stand out almost solely due to the performance of Eddie Murphy. It’s as if he never really left, slipping back into the role of Axel Foley as if it were a glove. There’s a fun balance of old character traits and new sensibilities here, the returning Axel F theme is as fantastic as always, and an ample amount of both action and comedy can be found in its surprisingly brisk runtime.

Trigger Warning

Read Our Review

Director Mouly Surya and lead actor Jessica Alba have teamed up for another intense Netflix thriller. Trigger Warning sees Alba donning the role of Parker, a highly-trained military operative who comes into possession of her father’s bar after his sudden death. However, as mysterious happenings and suspicious strangers start to intrude into Parker’s life, she’ll come to realize that her father’s death was no mere accident. Anthony Michael Hall, Mark Webber, Jake Weary, and Tone Bell co-star in this exciting action flick.

Jessica Alba’s Tense Thriller

Aside from marking Jessica Alba’s return to movies after a lengthy hiatus, as well as Mouly Surya’s English-language debut, Trigger Warning is a thriller whose pulpier elements make for an entertaining watch. It may not be the most insightful film, but what it lacks in certain complexities, it makes up for with an engaging lead performance by Jessica Alba. It’s also worth noting that the cinematography provided by Zoë White (Werewolf by Night, Catfight) does an ample job of elevating the action on-screen.

If you’re interested in seeing our exclusive interview with Jessica Alba and Mouly Surya, be sure to check out the video below.

Under Paris

One of the most popular films on Netflix for a time is also one of the streamer’s most straightforward titles. Under Paris, a French horror film by Xavier Gens, follows a marine biologist by the name of Sophia (Bérénice Bejo). After a routine expedition involving mako sharks unveils a terrifying discovery, Sophia is left with lingering trauma years later. Despite this, when old demons come back to haunt her, she’ll have to do everything she can to save Paris from a monstrous threat.

A Grim, French Version of Jaws

The efficacy in which Under Paris capitalizes on its violent premise is thoroughly appreciated. It helps that Xavier Gens has a talent for making some genuinely perturbing horror titles, having previously directed the divisive horror films Frontier(s) and Cold Skin. This giant shark film ultimately veers more on the ludicrous side of horror, taking its concepts to an entertaining extreme with a morbid ending and genuinely tense attack scenes.

Ultraman: Rising

One of Japan’s most beloved superhero properties has recently been brought to life once more. This time, however, both Netflix and Industrial Light & Magic were able to chip in. Ultraman: Rising follows Ken Sato (Christopher Sean), a confident basketball player who secretly moonlights as the colossal superhero Ultraman. However, on top of balancing his double life, he’ll have to throw a baby kaiju into the mix after taking it into his care.

A Fun Reinvention of Ultraman

For longtime fans of Ultraman, as well as those who’ve never heard of the character before, this family-friendly animated feature is sure to entertain. Early reviews of Ultraman: Rising have been positive overall, with many critics highlighting the strengths of the film’s animation and its English dubbing, especially Christopher Sean. It’s worth noting that Shannon Tindle is directing this film as well, having previously worked on classic titles like Kubo and the Two Strings and Coraline.

Godzilla Minus One

Read Our Review

After what felt like an eternity, Godzilla Minus One has finally come to international streaming. It’s about time too, as many consider it to be one of the greatest Godzilla movies ever made. Set in postwar Japan, Godzilla Minus One follows a former kamikaze pilot, Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), as he returns home following the bombing of Tokyo. However, after the atomic tests at Bikini Atoll empower an ancient menace, Shikishima is forced to confront a monster that has plagued his past.

One of the Best Godzilla Films

Not only did Godzilla Minus One make a huge splash at the box office, making back more than ten times its reported budget of around $10 million, but it also won Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards. It’s a visual marvel for how low its budget is, and it carries a compelling story to complement those effects. Not only that, the score provided by Naoki Sato (Assassination Classroom, Eureka Seven), is absolutely stunning, even earning Sato a nomination for Best Score at the Japanese Academy Awards.

Hit Man

Read Our Review

Richard Linklater is back in a film that’s sure to grab your attention. Marking the writing debut of Glen Powell, Hit Man sees Powell playing the role of Gary Johnson, an ordinary psychology professor. At least, that’s what he wants you to think. On the side, Johnson is actually working alongside the police as a fake contract killer in order to catch potential criminals. When Madison (Adria Arjona) solicits his help, however, Johnson finds himself stuck between two worlds as he wants to genuinely help her.

Linklater and Powell Form a Terrific Duo

It’s hard to find a true dud from Linklater, and thankfully, Hit Man does more than just impress. The chemistry shared between Powell and Arjona is believable, the jokes land well, and the film as a whole carries Linklater’s familiar style, albeit with a different genre edge. Combine that with the fact that Hit Man was based on a true story, and you have what is easily one of the most engaging Netflix films of the year. If this film is any indication, we’re more than eager to see what Powell has in store for his future writing endeavors.

Immaculate

Read Our Review

As one of several nun-themed horror films to release in 2024, Immaculate stands out due to one crucial element: Sydney Sweeney. Doubling as a producer for the film, Sweeney stars as Sister Cecilia, a new arrival to an isolated convent in Italy. However, after acclimating herself to the convent’s eclectic surroundings, a series of strange discoveries puts her on the path to discovering a horrifying truth. Álvaro Morte, Dora Romano, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Giorgio Colangeli co-star in this religious horror flick.

A Startling Sydney Sweeney Flick

Filmed on location in Rome, Immaculate is a horror movie that isn’t afraid of getting a bit gross. Though it spurred comparisons between it and The First Omen due to their similar themes and presentation, what you’ll find in Immaculate is a movie that more directly apes its influences, namely those from the 1970s. Sweeney is, of course, a fantastic lead as well, bringing an unexpected level of intensity and earnesty to her performance.

La Chimera

Read Our Review

This 2023 period dramedy was directed by Alice Rohrwacher, who originally debuted with Heavenly Body back in 2011. La Chimera follows the exploits of Arthur (Josh O’Connor), a British archaeologist who profits off of stolen artifacts. After being released from prison, Arthur quickly reconnects with his crew of graverobbers, though their conflicting interests may spell doom for their future expeditions. Carol Duarte, Vincenzo Nemolato, Alba Rorhwacher, and Isabella Rosellini co-star in this acclaimed period piece.

One of the Best International Films of 2023

Dubbed one of the best international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review, La Chimera is a fantastic examination of greed and loss. A bittersweet finale accompanies beautiful cinematography by Hélène Louvart, taking bold risks in presentation while utilizing its graverobbing cast as a significant piece in its thematic puzzle. It’s a movie that’s as real as can be, faults and all.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Read Our Review

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the next exciting entry in the Planet of the Apes franchise, albeit with an interesting twist. Rather than directly following the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom instead jumps centuries forward in time, focusing on a brand-new cast of simian characters. When Noa (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee, discovers the presence of a human named Mae (Freya Allan), the two find themselves at the center of a growing conflict spearheaded by a powerful ape leader known as Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand). Sara Wiseman, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy co-star in this impressive feat of visual effects.

A Stellar Standalone Story

Meant to be enjoyed as a standalone story, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes proves that there’s still potential to be found in the long-running film franchise. Owen Teague and Freya Allan are terrific leads, cementing their place as the faces of the franchise for potentially years to come. Of course, much like previous films in the series, the technologies that bring each of Kingdom‘s many apes to life continue to dazzle, melding incredible VFX with practical sets that enhance the action on-screen. As of writing, it’s also the tenth highest-grossing theatrical movie of the year.

Be sure to check out our exclusive interview with Owen Teague and Freya Allen below.

The Promised Land

Read Our Review

The Promised Land is what happens when you mix a compelling historical drama with yet another magnificent performance by Mads Mikkelsen. It follows Ludwig Kahlen (Mikkelsen), a former Danish army officer, starting life anew on the frontier with a plot of land to his name. However, after crossing paths with the all-powerful Frederik Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), Ludwig finds himself facing off against roaming vagrants, the harsh elements, and the encroaching reach of Frederik’s influence. Amanda Collin co-stars as Ann Barbara.

Mads Mikkelsen Does It Again

Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, whose notable works include the likes of A Royal Affair and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Promised Land marks a fantastic return to form after his efforts with 2017’s The Dark Tower. Mads Mikkelsen knocks the lead role out of the park, as he usually does, and the surrounding film was even selected as Denmark’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards. Its sweeping cinematography, its prominent themes, and the compelling performances shared by Amanda Collin and Simon Bennebjerg make for one of the best historical films of 2023.

The First Omen

Read Our Review

Yet another legacy horror installment? As easy as it would be to write off The First Omen as something cynical, some genuine strides were made to expand upon the classic 1976 film. Nell Tiger Free stars as Margaret, an American woman in Rome who tends to an orphanage. As she acclimates herself to the establishment and makes friends with its many patrons, she’ll start to uncover the traces of a supernatural conspiracy — one that may threaten life on Earth as we know it. Tawfeek Barhom, Sônia Braga, Ralph Ineson, and Bill Nighy co-star in this thrilling prequel film.

A Surprising Prequel to a Horror Classic

Director Arkasha Stevenson does a fantastic job in not only making an excellent prequel film, but a fantastic horror film overall. After their previous work in television, including directing several episodes of Legion and Channel Zero, they brought some compelling body horror and terrific performances to the table here. Nell Tiger Free in particular is a fantastic lead, having previously starred in Too Old to Die Young and the later seasons of Game of Thrones. Some have even drawn parallels from her performance here to that of Isabelle Adjani in Possession, or to that of Sydney Sweeney in Immaculate.

Be sure to check out our exclusive interview with Nell Tiger Free below.

Ferrari

Read Our Review

Michael Mann’s latest movie has finally hit streaming after debuting in December 2023. Ferrari, based on the 1991 biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine, sees Adam Driver playing the film’s titular lead. Struggling under the weight of his shattered family and his professional woes, Enzo Ferrari weighs his options during the onset of the 1947 Mille Miglia race. At the same time, Ferrari’s racing team, Scuderia Ferrari, is set to compete in the race.

Michael Mann’s Ferrari Biopic

Sport-themed biopics can be a dime a dozen, but those focused around the expensive world of auto racing are always a real treat. Adam Driver undergoes a complete transformation into the illustrious Enzo Ferrari, and the supporting cast featuring the likes of Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gadon, and Patrick Dempsey all craft compelling performances that carry this stellar biography to the finish. While it originally bombed at the box office, critical reception was more than just positive, as Ferrari would be dubbed one of the Top 10 Films of 2023 by the National Board of Review, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Poor Things

Read Our Review

Those familiar with director Yorgos Lanthimos’ filmography had an idea of what to expect from Poor Things. What nobody could’ve expected, however, was just how much of a splash it made both critically and commercially. Emma Stone stars as Bella Baxter, an unusual woman living an unusual life. Under the visage of an adult woman lies the mind of a child, and as she spends her days living life in Victorian England, Bella finds herself at the center of uncomfortable relationships, manipulation, and more in one of the most critically-lauded films of the year. Stone stars alongside the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.

Emma Stone Won Best Actress

For her performance in the lead role, Emma Stone famously won the Oscar for Best Actress, beating Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon as well as Carey Mulligan in Maestro. Poor Things would also secure nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director, only being topped by Oppenheimer in the sheer number of total nominations. Even with its experimental premise and unconventional approach, Poor Things tells a captivating story loaded with incredible performances, a surprising dose of humor, and prominent themes that deserves your attention.

Jackpot! (2024)

Read Our ReviewJohn Cena and Awkwafina co-star in the latest comedy on Prime Video. Jackpot! is an appropriate title, as Katie Kim (Awkwafina) is inadvertently thrust into a bizarre scenario in the middle of near-future California. The Grand Lottery has been established to fix the state’s financial woes, albeit with one morbid twist: the winning ticket can be taken by force. Kim is eventually deemed the winner of the Grand Lottery, forcing her to survive until sundown so she can claim her prize. In addition to Cena and Awkwafina, Sam Asghari, Simu Liu, Seann William Scott, Marian Green, and Dolly de Leon co-star in this explosive action comedy.

Flawed, But Fun

Paul Feig’s directorial style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the comedic prowess of both Awkwafina and John Cena is hard to ignore. The latter has continued to cement himself as a successful comedic act coming off of Ricky Stanicky and Max’s Peacemaker. Meanwhile, Awkwafina has been nothing if not an effective lead in her vast filmography, with her roles in Quiz Lady and Crazy Rich Asians balancing genuine charisma with terrific comedic timing. What you’ll find in Jackpot!, then, is a fun combination of these talents along with some engaging action to boot.

Be sure to check out our exclusive interview with Awkwafina and Paul Feig below.

Space Cadet

Read Our Review

Sometimes we just need a silly comedy to wind down with. Enter Space Cadet, the latest from director Liz W. Garcia. It follows Rex Simpson (Emma Roberts), a plucky Floridian woman who just wants to go to space — even if she’s not qualified to do so. However, when she fraudulently lands a spot in NASA’s astronaut training program, can she rise to the challenge and earn the skills she needs to excel? Tom Hopper, Poppy Liu, Gabrielle Union, and more co-star in this Prime Video-exclusive film.

A Straightforward Comedy

With some drawing parallels to Legally Blonde, Space Cadet soars to the skies in a comedy reminiscent of those from the early 2000s. There’s a level of self-awareness that permeates its feel-good gags, and the level of commitment to the absurd premise shown by Roberts certainly helps sell its silliness. If you’re looking for a fun summer comedy, it’s safe to say that Space Cadet is a worthy choice.

I Am: Celine Dion

Irene Taylor, the prolific director behind Beware the Slenderman and Hear and Now, is now covering one of the most famous Canadian singers alive today. I Am: Celine Dion is a behind-the-scenes look at the titular superstar’s life, chronicling everything from her childhood, to her incredible accomplishments, to the rare neurological disorder that affects her day-to-day life. The film’s accompanying soundtrack includes several of her most prominent hits, including “My Heart Will Go On”, the iconic song used for James Cameron’s Titanic.

An Intimate Look at Celine Dion’s Life

More than just a vanity project, I Am: Celine Dion is a film that aims to inspire on top of educating its audience about an incredibly rare condition. It’s an honest film, one that shows multiple sides of Celine Dion in a surprisingly emotional display that’ll tug on your heart. Underneath the sadness, however, remains a charming and charismatic woman whose openness is incredibly appreciated.

The Holdovers

Read Our Review

The Holdovers is more than just a holdover from last year. Directed by Alexander Payne of Sideways and The Descendants fame, The Holdovers is an apt title, as it focuses on a group of students at Barton Academy who are left on campus for the holidays. Now left in the care of Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti), an ornery history teacher, the group find themselves warming up to their hostile chaperone as he does the same for them. David Henningson penned the film’s script, it being his feature-length debut, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa co-starring alongside Giamatti.

The Holdovers Is an Authentic Period Piece

Seeing as how the film is set in the 1970s, there’s a genuine effort to recreate the era in every way you can imagine. Not only are the characters done up in period-appropriate costumes with similar dialects, the film itself employs similar pacing and story beats from films of the era, giving it an authentic feeling of being ripped straight out of the 1970s. Of course, Giamatti dazzles as Paul Hunham as well, with Dominic Sessa putting on a clinic of a performance in his feature-film debut. Giamatti would subsequently earn a Best Actor nomination, with Da’Vine Joy Randolph ultimately taking home the award for Best Supporting Actress.

American Fiction

Read Our Review

One of the most acclaimed comedic dramas of 2023 is now streaming on Prime Video, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you really ought to give it a shot. American Fiction, directed by Cord Jefferson in his feature-length film debut, sees Jeffrey Wright starring as Thelonious Ellison, a literature professor who’s in a conundrum. Though his novels receive admiration from his peers, a lack of sales, general disinterest from publishers, and rejection letters for not being “Black enough” has him in a creative rut. After a personal tragedy strikes, a frustrated Ellison opts to write a satirical novel that directly challenges stereotypes in the literary world. But what will Ellison do after his novel suddenly becomes a critical and financial smash-hit?

A Critically-Acclaimed Debut

If you lived under a rock during the Academy Awards, this impressive directorial debut secured not one, not two, but five separate nominations. These include Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Original Score, with Cord Jefferson ultimately winning the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Jeffrey Wright is an incredible lead, conveying the conflicting feelings of Ellison in a way that’s both endearing and hilarious at just the right moments. On top of that, the supporting cast featuring Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, and Keith David all add to an already strong screenplay with their respective performances. Be sure to check out our exclusive interview with both Sterling K. Brown and Jeffrey Wright below.

Road House (2024)

Read Our Review

Though the prospect of a Road House remake rubbed many the wrong way — and rightfully so. However, most would agree that this vivid reinterpretation of the early 1990s classic does enough to stand on its own merits. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Elwood Dalton, a former UFC fighter who has resorted to the criminal underworld in order to make his living. Tired of his current living conditions, he takes on a job at a distant roadhouse in Florida in exchange for some greater stability in his life. Unfortunately, he soon finds that trouble seems to follow him wherever he goes. Along with Gyllenhaal, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, and Jessica Williams make up the main cast, with popular UFC star Conor McGregor making his feature-length acting debut.

A Surprising Remake

Against all odds, what was believed to be nothing more than a cheap cash grab turned out to be a film with some surprisingly positive qualities. Doug Liman is in the director’s chair here, and his previous experience in the action genre gives him an edge in presenting Road House‘s brutal fight scenes. Gyllenhaal is as personable and iconic as ever, and many critics have noted the film’s tone, in particular, as a refreshing acknowledgment of its predecessor. Given how Road House could’ve turned out compared to other remakes, it’s nothing short of miraculous. For an exclusive interview with Road House‘s Dominique Columbus, check out the video below:

Young Woman and the Sea

Read Our Review

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer comes Young Woman and the Sea, an exciting biographical film based on a story by Glenn Stout. The film sees Daisy Ridley starring as Gertrude Ederle, a competitive swimmer who takes it upon herself to accomplish the impossible. She attempts to swim across the English Channel, a stretch of water nearly 21 miles long. Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodina, and Christopher Eccleston co-star in this stunning biographical film, with Joachim Rønning directing.

Based on a Fantastic True Story

While initially meant to go straight to streaming, Young Woman and the Sea would later go on to debut in theaters due to incredibly positive test screenings. Suffice to say, test audiences were onto something. Daisy Ridley shines in her latest lead role, the surrounding score by Amelia Warner brings out the best in every scene, and the film’s adherence to the real-life story makes for a thrilling watch. It’s an inspirational film, one that joins the likes of 2023’s The Boys in the Boat in giving a notable event the theatrical treatment it deserves.

Be sure to watch our exclusive interview with Joachim Rønning below.

Jim Henson Idea Man

Jim Henson, as both an artist and as a person, was an incredibly complex individual whose contributions to the world of television and film are too numerous to count. That said, Disney+ attempts to condense his life story into Jim Henson Idea Man, a documentary directed by the affable Ron Howard. Along with archival footage, interviews with Henson’s collaborators, including the likes of Frank Oz and Dave Goelz, provide insight into how Jim Henson conceptualized famous properties like The Muppets and Sesame Street. There’s also additional focus on his varying relationships, including the one he shared with his wife, Jane Henson.

A Worthy Documentary

While it’d be impossible to condense the many intricacies of Henson’s life into a single documentary film, let alone one that’s only a little over 100 minutes long, Jim Henson Idea Man makes a worthy effort. Its biggest draw is that it has the full cooperation of the Henson family, with previously unavailable archives being showcased here for all to see. It may not be the most comprehensive of documentaries, but it’s one that accomplishes its goal of highlighting Henson’s many talents.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

We’d be remiss if we neglected to mention what is arguably one of the most valuable films in Disney+’s repertoire. After a string of critically-mixed releases, Taylor Swfit: The Eras Tour debuted on the streamer to immediate success. A concert film at its core, The Eras Tour stitches together several performances from the titular globe-spanning musical tour with a touch of cinematic flair, as superstar pop artist Taylor Swift takes you through the many different “eras” of her prolific career. In its original theatrical run, the film became one of the biggest breakout successes of 2023, grossing more than ten times its budget of a measly 20 million USD without the use of a dedicated distributor.

One of the Most-Watched Musical Films

Given Taylor Swift’s unprecedented superstardom and this film’s exclusivity on Disney+, it’s no surprise that it quickly became one of the streamer’s most watched musical films in its vast library. Considering how many Disney musicals there are, that’s certainly a noteworthy accomplishment. For fans of Swift, or those simply curious about the star’s extensive musical career, The Eras Tour is one of the most essential pieces of film on Disney+. It’s a feature-length highlight reel of Swift’s entire career, and even if you’ve already seen it in theaters, content originally cut from the theatrical release has been restored for this streaming release. Check out the trailer for The Eras Tour below:

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1

Read Our Review

After a lukewarm response in theaters, the first part in a monolithic saga by Kevin Costner saw an explosion in popularity on streaming. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is more than just word salad. Directed by and starring Kevin Costner, Horizon follows Hayes Ellison (Costner), one of many sprawling characters in an epic Western saga, as the titular border town of Horizon grows and changes in the post-Civil War period. The first of four potential chapters, Horizon was written by Jon Baird and Kevin Costner, while also incorporating elements from an original story by Mark Kasdan.

The First Part of a Kevin Costner Saga

While Horizon has certainly split opinions, there are plenty of positives to look forward to for Western fans and casual viewers alike. It’s a classical Western through and through, blending melodrama with gargantuan visuals and methodical pacing. But it doesn’t necessarily veer into revisionism; rather, it plays itself straight. It’s a film that’s been called a passion project for Costner, even if he doesn’t necessarily agree with the term. Knowing that there are three more parts to come, each likely being as long as Chapter 1, you can’t help but be curious about how they’ll turn out.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Read Our ReviewAfter famously underperforming at the box office — a staple for the Mad Max franchise as a whole — this exciting side story has finally hit streaming. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga puts fan-favorite character Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) in the front seat of this exciting prequel to Fury Road, following her journey through a post-apocalyptic Australia. After being enslaved by Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), the leader of the Biker Horde, she’s left to claim revenge against both him and the malevolent Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme).

A Mad Max Movie Without Mad Max

Though the titular Max Rockatansky is absent from Furiosa, you can still find a similar level of high-octane action and impressive practical filming techniques. It’s even more impressive when you consider how long Furiosa languished in development hell. Anya Taylor-Joy does an impressive job in the absence of Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth is an entertaining addition to Mad Max lore, and the connections between this film and the main saga make for an incredible experience for Mad Max fans. While Furiosa may have floundered in its theatrical run, it’ll no doubt find a passionate audience on streaming.

Knox Goes Away

Read Our Review

Knox Goes Away is not only the latest Michael Keaton vehicle, but it’s also his latest directorial effort as well. Keaton stars as John Knox, an ordinary everyday contract killer. Unfortunately, a sudden revelation rocks his world. After being diagnosed with a rapid form of dementia, Knox is tasked with cashing out from his bloody career as fast as he can, all while battling trailing cops, additional contracts, and his own deteriorating consciousness. James Marsden, Suzy Nakamura, Joanna Kulig, and Al Pacino co-star in this tense crime thriller.

Keaton Takes the Lead

While critical reviews were mixed, Knox Goes Away pairs memory loss with several organic moving parts, forming a cohesive whole that’s amplified by Keaton’s compelling performance. Though this is only his second credit behind the camera, Keaton manages to stitch together a film with strong individual performances and interesting twists on a familiar premise. Its methodical pacing may put off some viewers, but the effort placed in presenting the protagonist’s growing frustrations makes for a thrilling watch.

Love Lies Bleeding

Read Our Review

Romance, violence, and thrills — these are the words that effectively describe A24’s Love Lies Bleeding, which has finally hit streaming. Directed by Rose Glass, this intense neo-noir tale sees Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian playing a gym owner and aspiring bodybuilder, respectively, as they inadvertently become entangled in a dangerous crime family. Dave Franco, Ed Harris, and Jena Malone co-star in this eclectic mashup of unique ideas, with Weronika Tofilska co-writing the screenplay alongside Rose Glass.

Love Lies Bleeding (With Positive Accolades)

Love Lies Bleeding deserves its many accolades. It’s a thrilling watch, combining an impressive score by Clint Mansell with iconic cinematography by Ben Fordesman. The latter had previously collaborated with Rose Glass for Saint Maud, bringing a similar level of impressive visuals here. While it may not have made a huge splash at the box office, its technical qualities and superb creative elements make for one of A24’s most fascinating films in recent years.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Read Our Review

While critical reviews were mixed for this anticipated continuation of the Monsterverse, there’s still a lot to like in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Directed by Adam Wingard, this sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong sees the two Titans joining forces to take on a mutual threat. When everyone’s favorite giant ape discovers more of his kind in the bowels of Hollow Earth, he, Godzilla, and a group of brave humans must fend off their invasion of the surface world. Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, and more reprise their roles from previous films.

Godzilla and Kong Together Again

The Monsterverse continues to grow with this exciting sequel, not only forging a deeper alliance between its giant titular leads, but also introducing even more monolithic creatures to the franchise. They’re the stars of the show, after all, with the malevolent Skar King and the all-powerful Shimo proving themselves to be ample villains in a power-packed universe. The returning cast does a fantastic job in carrying the film between its monstrous action scenes, and the film as a whole would go on to become not only the highest-grossing entry in the Monsterverse, but one of the highest-grossing films of 2024 so far.

Problemista

Julio Torres’ feature-length directorial debut is certainly an engaging one. In Problemista, Torres co-stars alongside Tilda Swinton, RZA, and Greta Lee in a story with a fairly creative premise. Alejandro (Torres), an immigrant from El Salvador, faces a harsh reality when his work visa is suddenly up on the chopping block. However, when he finds work with an enigmatic artist in the area, he may find the inspiration he needs to pursue his true passion.

A Unique Vision

Being an A24 project, it’s only natural to expect something a little unconventional. However, Problemista is more than just your typical eccentric indie movie. Tilda Swinton pairs well with Torres whenever the two are on-screen together, and favorable comparisons between this film and The Devil Wears Prada pop up from professional and casual reviews alike. It’s a film with a fun vision behind the camera, one that not only delivers laughs, but some thought-provoking themes to go with them.

The Zone of Interest

Read Our Review

After an extended hiatus, director Jonathan Glazer has returned to the world of film with a surprising entry. More than a decade after the release of Under the Skin, The Zone of Interest veers away from fantasy to tell a dramatic story rooted in World War II. The film follows Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), a commandant of Auschwitz, and his surrounding family. Though they live a short distance away from one of the most horrifying concentration camps in history, Höss attempts to make a perfect life for himself despite living in the proximity of unprecedented misery.

Jonathan Glazer’s Award-Winning Return

A movie as haunting as it is beautiful, The Zone of Interest is easily one of the best films of 2023, earning five nominations total at the Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, Best Sound, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director. It would eventually go on to win both Best Sound and Best International Feature Film. Its minimalist sound design, its incredible cast featuring Anatomy of a Fall‘s Sandra Hüller, and the experimental direction provided by Glazer makes for a historical drama that’ll linger with you long after the credits roll.

Dune: Part Two

Read Our Review

Dune: Part Two is finally streaming on Max, meaning you can catch one of the most anticipated films of 2024 from the comfort of your home. A direct continuation of 2021’s Dune, Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, with House Atreides now in ruins. Left with few allies on the planet Arrakis, Paul must set out and unify the Fremen in order to strike back against House Harkonnen. Denis Villeneuve is back in the director’s chair, with Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh, and Dave Bautista making up the principal cast.

A Successful Sequel to a Stellar Sci-fi Film

Being the single highest-grossing film of 2024 as of writing, it’s safe to say that Dune: Part Two was a full-blown phenomenon at the theaters. Much like its predecessor, its incredible effects, deliberate direction, and methodical pacing allow for an authentic adaptation of Frank Herbert’s original novels that we’ve yet to see before. The combined talents of composer Hans Zimmer, cinematographer Greig Fraser, and director Villeneuve amount to what will likely be the best films of 2024, period. If you want to experience both Dune films, Max also has the first Dune film as well.

The Iron Claw

Read Our Review

The world of professional wrestling is loaded with triumphant stories and tragic endings, but the Von Erichs are arguably the most prominent examples of both. The Iron Claw chronicles the life stories of the Von Erichs — a family of professional wrestlers — and the numerous tragedies that befell each of its individual members. Specifically, it focuses on the sons of Fritz Von Erich, including Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron), Kerry Von Erich (Jeremy Allen White), and David Von Erich (Harris Dickinson). Sean Durkin both wrote and directed The Iron Claw, having previously directed Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011.

A Shocking and Enthralling Sports Drama

There’s a lot to love in The Iron Claw, even if its content is legitimately heartbreaking. Zac Efron gives what is arguably the single best performance of his career here, and fans of professional wrestling will love the film’s dedication to authentically replicating the profession throughout. While it was famously snubbed at the Academy Awards, several prominent figures in the world of professional wrestling, including the real-life Marshall Von Erich and prolific journalist Dave Meltzer, sung praise for The Iron Claw‘s individual performances. Even if you’re not a wrestling fan, it’s a captivating tale with dizzying highs and lows that’s sure to get the waterworks going.

Dream Scenario

Read Our Review

What if everyone you knew saw the same person in their dreams? And what if that person was played by Nicolas Cage? That’s the scenario in Dream Scenario, a film that examines what happens when everyone sees the same real-life man in their dreams. While Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) is surprised by his newfound popularity at first, things will quickly take a dramatic turn as the novelty of his situation begins to wear off. The film was written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli, with Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Dylan Gelula, and Dylan Baker making up the rest of the principal cast.

Separating Dreams from Reality

On top of securing a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Nicolas Cage truly shines in Dream Scenario. Just like his performance in Pig, he’s given an opportunity to veery away from the ham-laden performances most would associate him with in favor of something more purposefully subdued, with his lack of agency in the story being a notable highlight. Without going into any specific spoilers, this eclectic film goes in a direction you wouldn’t necessarily expect, keeping you on your toes until its intriguing conclusion.
