Fans of the MonsterVerse will have to wait until they see the follow-up to the successful Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Director Adam Wingard will instead be prioritizing a movie with A24, becoming the latest filmmaker to grace the “indie” movie studio.
Titled Onslaught, the movie will be the next project by Wingard and will be released before he tackles any other films. Information on the film is currently scarce, but it is said to be more in line with the director’s initial films. Likewise, it’s just one example of A24’s expansion, with the studio pursuing more major directors and going beyond its smaller-scale boundaries.
Godzilla x Kong Holds Top Spot at Box Office as The First Omen Flounders
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire reigns supreme at the box office for its second weekend.
A24 was the winning team for Adam Wingard’s next movie, Onslaught. The film’s exact plot is unknown, but it’s been described as an action thriller. Likewise, the project will also be a collaboration with Simon Barrett, with Barrett writing it while Adam Wingard directing. This is only the latest such team-up between the two filmmakers, with Barrett having also written Wingard’s films You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die and the recent Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Before entering the MonsterVerse, Wingard’s filmography mostly contained these smaller horror and thriller projects, with Onslaught apparently having more in common with those works than big blockbusters.
Shooting for the new movie is expected to begin in the fall, though a release date is unknown. It showcases how A24 has begun seeking out projects and specific directors to bolster its line of movies. A recent release from the distributor was Alex Garland’s Civil War, which was the most expensive A24 film yet at a budget of $50 million USD. It’s since received positive reviews and nearly doubled its budget. The Ryder Picture Company will produce Onslaught alongside A24, and though Wingard is confirmed to be making the movie, it’s yet to be revealed if he’ll actually be returning for the next MonsterVerse feature.

The MonsterVerse Is Still Going Strong After 10 Years
The MonsterVerse from Legendary Pictures began in 2014 with the release of Godzilla, which was the second Hollywood attempt at adapting the Japanese giant monster following the disappointing and controversial 1998 Roland Emmerich movie. The film was followed up by Kong: Skull Island, with the two titular monsters finally duking it out in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Since then, there have also been numerous spinoffs for the shared universe, namely Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire revitalized the series after it experienced a stall with the release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has currently made over $500 million USD on a budget that’s said to have topped out at $150 million, making over three times that budget back. Despite this success, it’s unknown where the MonsterVerse will go from here or which monsters will get the spotlight next. Beyond Godzilla and Kong, Adam Wingard has also expressed interest in directing a movie adaptation of the 1980s cartoon series, Thundercats.
