Legendary animator, filmmaker, and manga artist Hayao Miyazaki has a long-withstanding legacy to his name for his astounding achievements in cinema. The director has redefined Japanese animation with beautiful storytelling capabilities in his sleeves. Now, the director is making another movie and it might just break Christopher Nolan’s Oscar record with ease.
Miyazaki, regarded as one of the most accomplished filmmakers and one of the best animators in global cinema, has founded Studio Ghibli and produced several acclaimed titles including Spirited Away, and Castle in the Sky. Nolan who has been a masterful director himself, created a stunning legacy to his name as well. However, he might have a long road ahead to beat Miyazaki’s next potential Oscar record.
Hayao Miyazaki’s Son Teased The Next Movie From The Director
Hayao Miyazaki’s animated movies have touched the hearts of global fans and the director’s popularity increased with the formation of his legacy. Following the success of The Boy and the Heron, the director already has another project on the table. Goro Miyazaki, son of the legendary director and Managing Director of Studio Ghibli recently gave an update on the next movie from the maker of Spirited Away.
I’d tell him, ‘Make some for future projects. Only making them for your past stuff is boring.’ He’s making some now though. I don’t know if it’ll actually be for his next film, but it’s looking like an action-adventure-type movie, nostalgic and reminiscent of the old days.
His statement addressing the Japanese press (retrieved via Comicbook.com) has certainly raised the expectations among fans. The new movie from the director, as Goro teased, will be more of an action-adventure blended with nostalgia. Considering the prowess of the director, the upcoming movie would make a huge splash and will most certainly be Oscar-bound.
Hayao Miyazaki Could Beat Christopher Nolan’s Oscar Record
Christopher Nolan made his cinematic career with almost every movie from his mind claiming astounding box-office numbers. With the soaring box-office success, the director has also crafted his movies to be critical darling. Nolan’s most recent movie, Oppenheimer earned a stunning $974 at the global box office (per The Numbers). The movie also claimed 7 Oscars including Best Picture, Directing, Actor in a Leading Role, and Actor in a Supporting Role.
With Oppenheimer, Nolan won two Oscars which ties him with Miyazaki. The Japanese animator won an Oscar for his 2001 fantasy adventure Spirited Away, the director recently got another historic win with his 2023 flick The Boy and the Heron.
As Miyazaki is planning another movie, the 83-year-old may secure another win to his glorious career leaving Nolan behind the race. Of course, Nolan would also bring more projects in the near future with more spectacular cinematic stories but the very commercial element of his movies might not elevate his case while Miyazaki’s movies have always been the artistic and aesthetic experience. It would be interesting to see what the directors will achieve with their upcoming projects.
The Boy and the Heron and Oppenheimer are showing in select theaters, Oppenheimer is available to stream on Peacock.
