The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is getting another shot at finding an audience. Lionsgate has revealed that the Henry Cavill-led action movie is heading to Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through this Friday.
Although The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has been in theaters for less than a month, the movie has drastically underperformed at the box office. At the time of writing, Ungentlemanly Warfare has only grossed $19.3 million worldwide off a budget of $60 million, meaning that the movie is destined to be a financial failure, at least during its theatrical run. This is likely why Lionsgate is releasing The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on PVOD on Friday, May 10, hoping that those who don’t frequent the theater will buy or rent the movie at home. Digital platforms that Ungentlemanly Warfare will be available on include, but are not limited to, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and Vudu.
‘Enormously Talented’: Jerry Bruckheimer Addresses Alan Ritchson Becoming the Next Big Action Star
Exclusive: Jerry Bruckheimer comments on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’s Alan Ritchson rising as the next major action star.
Directed by Guy Ritchie and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on Damien Lewis’ book The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: How Churchill’s Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops. Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson, as well as Arash Amel and Guy Ritchie, adapted the book for the screen.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare tells the “incredible true story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming,” reads the synopsis. “The top secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks led by Gus March-Phillipps (Cavill), goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately, the task force’s audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British SAS and modern black ops warfare.”
Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare Star Disagrees With Inglourious Basterds Comparison
Exclusive: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’s Babs Olusanmokun says it’s not accurate to call the film “Guy Ritchie’s Inglourious Basterds.”
Henry Cavill Still Open to Playing James Bond
With Fleming pulling from his wartime service and career when writing the James Bond novels, Cavill’s leading role in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Service, which features actor Freddie Fox as Fleming, has reignited the fandom’s desire to see the actor step into the role of 007. While the 40-year-old Cavill has doubts due to his age, he’s not ruling anything out, stating in April 2024, “Maybe I’m too old now. Maybe I’m not. It’s up to Barbara Broccoli and Mike Wilson, and we’ll see what their plans are.”
Another actor that fans wouldn’t mind seeing in the role of James Bond is Cavill’s Ungentlemanly Warfare co-star Henry Golding. Although Golding admitted that it felt “amazing” to be part of the conversation, he revealed that he was more interested in the real-life events than the fictionalized ones Fleming wrote about later in his life. “Ian Fleming sort of plays a small role in Ministry, but Gus Phillips, Captain Gus Phillips, was the true inspiration. Him, and many of these very brave men who completed these missions, who went behind enemy lines, they all inspired the Bond stuff,” he explained. “So, in essence, I think I’m more excited to sort of see the true core of where all those stories stem from.”
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare arrives on PVOD on May 10.
