Hunter x Hunter Gets an Exciting Netflix Update

October 13, 20244 Mins Read

The Hunter x Hunter anime series has been streaming on Netflix for years now, but fans have not had any new franchise updates on the streaming platform until recently. Starting this fall, however, two Hunter x Hunter movies are making their way to Netflix’s catalog.

Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge and Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission are both set to land on Netflix for the very first time this coming fall, with the official Netflix website now displaying these films in its gallery, including descriptions, cast info and an expected release date of Nov. 1, 2024. Hunter x Hunter has long been cemented as a fan-favorite martial arts/adventure anime, adapted from an equally successful manga series by Yoshihiro Togashi (also well-known as the creator of Yu Yu Hakusho). The Hunter x Hunter movies have long been difficult for fans to stream, so their addition to Netflix is certainly great news for fans.

Killua and Gon in the Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rogue movie

Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge is the first feature film of the franchise and was initially released in Japan in January 2013, where it debuted at number one at the Japanese box office. Its official description reads: “Gon, a young hunter, reunites with his friends to deal with an ex-member of the Phantom Troupe who attacked Kurapika and his family and stole their eyes.” Meanwhile, the second and only other Hunter x Hunter anime movie was released that same year in December, grossing $8.71 million domestically. The Last Mission is officially described: “Gon and Killua fight enemies from their organization’s past when the embittered Jed seeks to make the Hunter’s black ops records public.”

Although neither of the films are canon to the original story of Hunter x Hunter, they do provide exciting backstory moments for some key characters. In Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge, which is set after the “Yorknew City” arc, audiences learn about Kurapika’s past and the tragedy that befell his clan — one of his key motivations in the series. Meanwhile, Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission opens with a younger Netero defeating the film’s antagonist, Jed — that is, before the present-day action of the film begins and Jed immobilizes Netero, neutralizing his Nen. Netero is widely regarded as one of the strongest characters in the series, having fought toe-to-toe against Meruem and survived a journey into the Dark Continent.
