The best new shows and movies on Hulu in February

SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) (Feb. 13)

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s last music documentary, the Oscar-winning Summer of Soul, was so good that it earned him an automatic must-watch tag on his next project before even knowing what it was about. Fans of Summer of Soul, get ready, because Questlove’s new film, SLY LIVES!, is all about one of Summer of Soul‘s most entertaining subjects: the the funk, soul, and rock group Sly and the Family Stone. Whereas Summer of Soul focused on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, SLY LIVES! will detail the legacy and influence of the “Everyday People” and “Family Affair” band. [Trailer] 

A Thousand Blows (Feb. 21)

Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, isn’t a stranger to staging big fights in old-timey England in his shows. But his new series, A Thousand Blows, is almost exclusively about fisticuffs, as Knight explores the world of underground bare-knuckle boxing. The series follows a pair of Jamaican immigrants (Malachi Kirby and Francis Lovehall) who get sucked into unsanctioned scrappin’ by the leader of the Forty Elephants (Erin Doherty) and go up against a veteran boxer (Stephen Graham) who isn’t keen on giving up his crown. [Trailer] 

Shoresy Season 4 (Feb. 26)

Shoresy remains one of Hulu’s hidden comedy gems despite a growing legion of hardcore fans who hang on to every lewd comment, tooth-loosening punch to the face, and “huh?” from its title character, the irascible, irritating, and surprisingly sensitive Shoresy, played to buffoonish perfection by series star and creator Jared Keeso. The Letterkenny spin-off about a small town semi-pro hockey team in Canada blankets a keen sense of emotion in a barrage of “your mom” jokes, making this the fratty comedy that you didn’t think you’d like but ended up loving. Keeso’s unique comedic cadence and secret language is its lifeblood, but the soundtrack and the montages are to die for. Now can we please get Letterkenny‘s Jonesy and Reilly to make an appearance, bro? [Trailer]
