Game-inspired film breaking box office records

Perhaps not surprisingly, the best-selling video game of all time is seeing even more success with the movie based on its world of blocks, pickaxes and monsters.

Over the weekend, A Minecraft Movie made an estimated $301 million US globally, making it the biggest opening for a movie so far this year.

It also broke the record for the most money earned by a video game adaptation during its opening weekend, which was previously held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The new PG-rated movie, which hit theatres April 4, is led by Jack Black and Jason Momoa.

Their characters are transported into an imaginative dimension called the Overworld, where they embark on an absurd and dangerous journey to get home.

Kids shouting in excitement

Sorry adults, but if you were hoping to watch this movie in a quiet theatre, you can forget about that.

If you were also hoping for a cinematic masterpiece, you might be out of luck there, too — Rotten Tomatoes critics have given it a 47 per cent score.

But kids seem to be losing their minds with joy.

Users all over social media have been sharing videos and posts about kids all over the globe clapping, cheering, screaming and even yelling famous meme lines during the movie.

A post on X reads: “Crowd reaction to @Minecraft yesterday. It was awesome seeing these younger kids and teens have so much fun at the theatre! It reminded me of how going to the movies used to and should be!”

Along with screams of joy and unfiltered excitement, a lot of the videos shared online show moviegoers throwing popcorn and other food at the screen.

CBC Kids News was unable to independently verify the videos.

In an email to CBC Kids News, Cineplex Odeon did not comment on reports of chaotic behaviour in theatres but asked that moviegoers be respectful and abide by their code of conduct.

That includes not throwing popcorn.

Without spoiling too much, there is a viral moment from the movie featuring a character named Chicken Jockey that moviegoers have been going especially wild for.

In the film, Black and Momoa face a baby zombie who rides a chicken during a boxing match, at which point Black’s character yells “Chicken Jockey!”

A post on X from user @Dexterto reads: “‘Chicken Jockey’ celebrations at Minecraft Movie screenings are getting so wild, cinemas are warning fans not to throw food or drinks”. On the left, a photo shows a sign that reads “We know the Chicken Jockey is epic — but please don’t throw popcorn or soft drinks at the screen.” On the right, a still of the movie scene with a baby zombie and a chicken.

A chicken jockey is a rare sighting in the Minecraft video game where a baby zombie or other character is seen riding a chicken.

The moment in the movie has caused particular uproar and exuberance — so if you’re bothered by loud noises, that might be a good time to plug your ears.
