Welcome to another weekly recap of everything new that has hit Netflix in the US over the past seven days. We’ll check in with all 25 new movies, series, and games, plus what’s been trending in the daily top 10 charts.
Still, there is plenty to look forward to for the rest of May 2024, including the confirmation today that the Bryan Cranston Showtime series Your Honor will indeed be hitting Netflix on May 31st.
Now, let’s get into the new arrivals, including some what-to-watch picks, which won’t include Bridgerton season 3 – part 1, as we’ll already assume you’ve all binge-watched it!
What to Watch / Play on Netflix This Weekend
Thelma the Unicorn (2024)
Rating: PG
Language: English
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy
Director: Jared Hess, Lynn Wang
Writer: Aaron Blabey, Jared Hess, Jerusha Hess
Our first highlight is the brand new animated feature film that comes out of the French studio Mikros Animation and is easily one of the most visually striking movies Netflix has put out to date.
The musical, aimed at families, sees a pony hoping to make it big in the music business but is struggling to break through the noise and discovers the best way to be seen is to become a pink unicorn.
In our review published this morning, we gave it a 3 out of 5 stars, concluding:
“Overall, Thelma the Unicorn may be a far cry from the books your child read in preschool, but the messaging still remains – Be yourself and be loyal to the people who stand by you no matter what. That message, Brittney Howard’s signature vocals, a deep cast of comedy veterans, and the quirky writing of Jared & Jerusha Hess make this film worth your family’s time.”
Upgrade (2018)
Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Director: Leigh Whannell
Cast: Logan Marshall-Green, Melanie Vallejo, Steve Danielsen
Writer: Leigh Whannell
Runtime: 100 min / 1h 40m
The title at the top of the article is Upgrade, a 2018 sci-fi action thriller that seemed to do something rare and pleased both critics and audiences!
Coming from Blumhouse, the movie sees you following a technophobe living in the distant future where most people have augmentations, and to enact revenge, he gets an experimental computer chip implant that grants him super abilities.
It’s kickass from the start, featuring excellent fight sequences and convincing CGI. It’s well worth a watch!
The 8 Show (Season 1)
Number of episodes: 8
Rating: TV-MA
Language: Korean
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Cast: Ryu Jun-yeol, Chun Woo-hee, Park Jeong-min, Lee Yul-eum, Park Hae-joon, Lee Zoo-young
Runtime: 52 mins
We’ve got a lot riding on The 8 Show. Given its dystopian concept and the wackiness you’d expect from a show like this, we’ve already dubbed it the potential successor to Squid Game.
Here’s what you can expect from the new K-drama:
“Eight contestants in financial hardship take part in Money Game, a reality competition with 44.8 billion won up for grabs. To win they must endure 100 days in a sparse studio as all purchases carry a 1000x markup, subtracted from the prize”
Braid: Anniversary Edition
After a few months of not receiving many new games, May is bringing the goods with five planned releases so far, with one of them being the slightly delayed remaster of the puzzle game that has you manipulating both space and time.
The new release has been getting rave reviews thus far and also has the added benefit of being pretty stable across all devices, something that can’t be said for many of Netflix’s other recent releases.
If you don’t fancy playing the game on your mobile device, the remaster also dropped on a slew of other devices this week, too, although it won’t be free like it is on Netflix!

The remarkable story (both on and off screen) of Baby Reindeer continues this week, with it taking the top spot away from Bodkin, which should’ve hit its strike this week in the top 10s.
