Happy Friday, and welcome to your rundown of what’s new on Netflix in the US for the week ending April 5th, 2024. We’ll run through all 110 new movies and series that have touched down this week, plus we’ll pick out some highlights and cover what’s been trending in the top 10s.
If you’re thinking, “That’s a lot of additions!” You’d be correct! Primarily, thanks to the first-of-the-month refresh, which says 77 new movies and series were added and 70 depart, there’s a lot new to watch. Part of those 77 additions was Netflix’s new collection of movies celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Just another quick note before we dig in: There are no daily top 10s today, as Netflix has yet to refresh its daily top 10s as of publishing.
What to Watch on Netflix This Weekend
Parasyte: The Grey (Season 1)
Number of episodes: 6
Rating: TV-MA
Language: Korean
Genre: Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
Cast: Koo Kyo-hwan, Jeon So-nee, Jung Hyun Lee
Writer: Hitoshi Iwaaki
Runtime: 61 mins / 1h 1m
If there’s one thing the Koreans have brought to us over the past few months, it is weird. First, we followed a story where somebody turned themselves into a chicken nugget, and now we’ve got a horror sci-fi movie where weird-looking parasites are taking over the globe.
Our own Jacob liked the series enough to include it in our top K-dramas list released in 2024 so far, so if you’re still waiting for Hellbound season 2, this should be a sensible stopgap.
SCOOP (2024)
Language: English
Genre: Biography, Drama
Director: Philip Martin
Cast: Gillian Anderson, Rufus Sewell, Keeley Hawes
Writer: Geoff Bussetil, Peter Moffat
Runtime: 102 min / 1h 42m
Netflix’s big new movie for the week from its own roster of titles hails from the United Kingdom and seeks to retell the story of how the BBC Newsnight team bagged the infamous interview between Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew.
“Scoop is a taut journalistic drama with the pace & energy of a thriller. Focused on the women who brought the infamous interview to the screen & their motives for making it a success, the film mostly succeeds in making the story expand to more than the recent, well-known trainwreck in which the world is mostly familiar. However, much like the interview itself, it will not interrogate nor dig too deep past what we know and feels satisfied with its surface level accomplishment. The intense atmosphere & talent in front of and behind the camera will keep you riveted, but it won’t keep you buzzing after the film is done.”
Suzume (2022)
Rating: PG
Language: Hindi
Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure
Director: Makoto Shinkai
Cast: Nanoka Hara, Hokuto Matsumura, Eri Fukatsu
Writer: Makoto Shinkai
Runtime: 122 min / 2h 2m
Arriving on Netflix around the globe today (by surprise, it must be added) is Suzume, the 2022 anime feature film from the studio Toho. Nominated for a Golden Globe, the movie comes from the esteemed director behind the likes of Your Name, Weathering with You, and The Garden of Words. Until now, the movie had only been available via Crunchyroll.
Here’s what you can expect from the critically acclaimed anime:
“After she unknowingly opens a door of chaos, 17-year-old Suzume joins forces with a young man to help prevent more calamity from befalling Japan.”
Serena (2014)
Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Drama, History, Romance
Director: Susanne Bier
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Rhys Ifans
Writer: Christopher Kyle, Ron Rash
Runtime: 109 min / 1h 49m
Two of the biggest actors in Hollywood came together for this historical romance a decade ago, which sees a couple building a business empire during the great depression but their family life begins to deteriorate while it’s expanding.
Looking back through the reviews for this film, it’s shocking how polarizing it was back when it was released. You’re going to find two types of people. Some hate it with a passion, and others think that the two leading actors carry you through to the end. If you’ve not yet watched Serena – let us know which one of the two you are in the comments when you’re done!
