Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may have already begun playing in North American theaters by the time you read this, but it started rolling out internationally a couple of days ago.
That means spoilers have already begun finding their way online and, perhaps most surprisingly, some pretty lengthy clips as well! Most are of the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel’s monster battles, with some running upwards of 2 minutes…and in shockingly good quality.
Warner Bros. and Legendary are moving fast to remove them, though they’re currently pretty easy to find on social media platforms like X, Reddit, and TikTok (while we won’t be sharing any footage here, trust us when we say they’re not exactly hidden).
However, there’s one moment, in particular, which is already generating discussion and is likely to split opinions in a big way this Easter weekend.
SPOILER WARNING: As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, at some point in the movie, it appears Godzilla and Kong come to blows when the former gets the wrong end of the stick and attacks his friend-turned-foe. During the fight (which takes place in Egypt), Godzilla hits Kong with a suplex. Yes, the wrestling move.
How is it possible with those tiny arms? Your guess is as good as ours!
While some of the older Godzilla movies have featured this level of cheesiness – typically when these Titans were portrayed by men in rubber suits – a lot of kaiju fans feel this is a step too far. Others, meanwhile, have praised filmmaker Adam Wingard for embracing the ridiculousness of the MonsterVerse…even if it didn’t exactly start off that way in 2014’s Godzilla.
As we write this, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has a solid 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and that’s likely Fresh enough to ensure plenty of people head out to watch the movie in theaters this weekend, regardless of these leaks.
The epic battle continues! Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse follows up the explosive showdown of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ with an all-new adventure that pits the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence—and our own. ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ delves further into the histories of these Titans and their origins, as well as the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire stars returning Godzilla vs. Kong actors Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kaylee Hottle alongside Dan Stevens (Legion), Alex Ferns (The Batman), and Fala Chen (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings).
The screenplay is by Terry Rossio (Godzilla vs. Kong) and Simon Barrett (You’re Next) and Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), from a story by Rossio & Wingard & Barrett, based on the character “Godzilla” owned and created by TOHO Co., Ltd.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire rampages into theaters on March 29.
