Miami Vice Movie Courts Michael B. Jordan For Tubbs Role
According to Deadline, the upcoming Miami Vice movie from F1 and Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski may have just found the actor to play Ricardo Tubbs. It seems Creed star Michael B. Jordan is in early talks to take on the iconic role originated by Philip Michael Thomas for five seasons on the hit NBC series.
In the original series, Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs is a New York City detective who moves to Miami to pursue the drug kingpin who murdered his brother. There, he meets with beach bum/cowboy Vice cop Sonny Crockett, and the two join forces to take down bad guys in the ever-failing War on Drugs.
While he wasn’t my personal first choice, I did mention Michael B. Jordan in my earlier opinion piece about casting the film (linked below). But now that I think of it, I think Jordan has what it takes to translate Tubbs’ effortless charm and swagger, a veneer he uses to cover up his righteous sense of justice and deeply empathic sensitivity.
If Jordan gets locked in, then we can move on to Crockett. I’m personally rooting for Glen Powell, but they’ll need to find someone who can still project cowboy energy while wearing white linen and cozy loafers. That’s easier said than done.
Miami Vice is currently scheduled for release on August 6, 2027.
