A Minecraft Movie’s 34-second song is now a record-breaking hit

There’s no bird flu in the Overworld; everything chicken related seems to turn to gold. While appalling from a theater etiquette perspective, the viral, popcorn-flinging chicken jockey phenomenon has already powered A Minecraft Movie to a massive $816 million worldwide in just four weeks. Now, a very, very short song titled “Steve’s Lava Chicken” is clucking its way into the history books.

Apparently, if you want your movie to have a viral hit, the key is to just let Jack Black do his thing. “Steve’s Lava Chicken,” a jingle containing only about three dozen words, just broke into the Billboard Hot 100 at number 77. At a mere 34 seconds, it’s now the shortest song to ever make the list. Kid Cudi previously wore the crown for his 37-second “Beautiful Trip,” per Stereogum.

If you’re curious, André 3000’s “I Swear, I Really Wanted To Make A ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time” represents the other end of this spectrum at 12 minutes and 20 seconds. Shockingly, it doesn’t hold the record for longest Billboard charting song title. Both Ray Stevens’ “Jeremiah Peabody’s Polyunsaturated Quick-Dissolving Fast-Acting Pleasant-Tasting Green And Purple Pills” (1960) and Stars On 45’s “Medley: Intro ‘Venus’/Sugar Sugar/No Reply/I’ll Be Back/Drive My Car/Do You Want To Know A Secret/We Can Work It Out/I Should Have Known Better/Nowhere Man/You’re Going To Lose That Girl/Stars On 45” (1981) are longer. In fact, it may take you longer to read the Stars On 45 title out loud than it takes to listen to the entirety of “Steve’s Lava Chicken.”

The Minecraft song is actually Black’s second Hot 100 hit. “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit a peak of 56 in 2023. You can listen to all 34 seconds of “Steve’s Lava Chicken” below:
