Award-winning singer and actress Andra Day has unveiled a new track, “Bricks,” which is featured in the end credits of the new film Exhibiting Forgiveness.
The rousing ballad, which Day co-wrote with the song’s producer, Jherek Bischoff, is a beautiful depiction of building a relationship from the ground up.
“What we do is what we do / Brick by brick that’s how we move / No foundation (building with bricks that we were never given) / I am your safe place (safe place) / (Filling the places we were never filled in) / And you are my treasure / Who can say it’s not a miracle,” Day coos.
Day stars in Exhibiting Forgiveness alongside André Holland, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and John Earl Jelks. Titus Kaphar wrote and directed the film, which is in theaters now.
Per the logline, “Tarrell (Holland) is an admired American painter who lives with his wife, singer Aisha (Day), and their young son, Jermaine. Tarrell’s artwork excavates beauty from the anguish of his youth, keeping past wounds at bay. His path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, La’Ron (Jelks), a conscience-stricken man desperate to reconcile.
Tarrell’s mother, Joyce (Ellis-Taylor) a pious woman with a profound and joyful spirituality, hopes that Tarrell can open his heart to forgiveness, giving them all another chance at being a family. Tarrell and La’Ron learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving in this raw and deeply moving film.”
“Bricks” is the follow-up to Day’s rendition of the classic hymn “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow,” which was released on Aug. 30.
The Warryn Campbell-produced song is featured in The Deliverance, the Lee Daniels-directed horror movie in which Day stars opposite Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, and Anthony B. Jenkins.
Day released her third album, Cassandra (cherith), on May 10 via Warner Records. The album was preceded by the singles “Where Do We Go,” “Probably,” and “Chasing.”
“Cassandra (cherith) is a journey through my soul, from a state of being already full rather than from a place of lack,” Daye explained. “It’s an intimate reflection of my personal experiences and growth, presented through the language of music.”
