Exactly When Every Song Plays In The Marvels
Due to The Marvels’ shorter runtime compared to other MCU movies, the number of total tracks in the new film is subsequently smaller as well (while still being incredibly fitting). However, the movie also features two original musical numbers thanks to the incredibly unique planet known as Aladna. Additionally, The Marvels’ post-credits scene also features classic Marvel scores first heard in a completely different universe beyond Earth-616. Here’s the full list of when every song is heard in The Marvels.
- “Double Bubble Trouble” by M.I.A (2013) plays just after Kree Supremor Dar-Benn finds a Quantum Band in space and questions where its twin is. The movie then cuts to Jersey City and Kamala Khan’s room where Ms. Marvel is writing a fan-fiction comic about one day teaming up with Captain Marvel, her all-time favorite hero. As seen in her own Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel is the owner of the other Quantum Band that unlocked her hard-light projection abilities, turning her into a new hero in the MCU.
- “Ratata” by Skrillex, Missy Elliott, and Mr. Oizo (2023) plays during the first action sequence where Carol, Monica, and Kamala initially discover their quantum entanglement. While they fight Dar-Benn’s Kree warriors, each hero swaps places whenever they use their powers. As such, the action sequence is quite stunning with several jumps to different locations. To that end, “Ratata” certainly keeps things fast-paced and fun as the trio tries to get their bearings.
- “Intergalactic” by Beastie Boys (1998) plays aboard Captain Marvel’s ship when the newly dubbed Marvels decide to get a true handle on their swapping predicament. What follows is a very fun training montage of sorts where the heroes learn to work together in light of their quantum entanglement. “Intergalactic” was predominantly used in the trailers for The Marvels as well, so it’s nice to see it featured in the actual movie itself.
- “Welcome Home” by James Murphy, Nico Muhly, and Laura Karpman (2023) is an original musical number for The Marvels sung by the residents of the planet Aladna who only converse through song and dance. As such, they all welcome Captain Marvel who’s revealed to be their princess, having married Aladna’s Prince Yan (Park Seo-Joon) in the past as a diplomatic solution to end a period of prior political upheaval.
- “Duet” by James Murphy, Nico Muhly, and Laura Karpman (2023) is subsequently sung by Brie Larson and Seo-Joon when Captain Marvel asks for his help against Dar-Benn and her Kree warriors. Naturally, Carol had to dance and sing with Prince Yan, following the planet’s very humorous customs and practices as the MCU’s Princess of Aladna.
- “Memory” by Barbara Streisand (1981) plays during the most ridiculously hilarious moment in The Marvels. With the orbital S.A.B.E.R station set to explode, an incredibly unorthodox solution presented itself to get everyone to safety. As “Memory” plays from the classic musical Cats, the Marvels, Nick Fury, and the Khans use Goose and her new family of flerken kittens to swallow all the SABER crew members, allowing the hundreds aboard the station to all fit on the only remaining escape craft before being subsequently and violently vomited upon landing. It’s truly one of the weirdest moments in the MCU made even better by the genius track selection.
- “X2: X-Men United Score” by John Ottman (2006) and “Days of Future Past Score” by John Ottman (2014) are both heard during The Marvels‘ post-credits scene. After Monica inadvertently becomes trapped in the wrong universe, she wakes up to a variant of her mother known as Binary as well as Beast of the X-Men played by actor Kelsey Grammer who reprised his role from Fox’s original trilogy of X-Men films (and a cameo in Days of Future Past). As such, hearing these classic scores is very exciting, especially considering what it could mean for the future of the MCU regarding the classic Marvel mutants in this adjacent reality.
