When the movie Mufasa: The Lion King arrived in theaters in December 2024, it was met with mixed reviews, but solid box office receipts. More than half a billion dollars later, the partially-animated film is a certified commercial success, though for at least a little while, it seemed that none of the songs created for the movie would become popular on their own. That’s changed in only the span of about a month, thanks largely to a social media platform that may be gone for good.
“I Always Wanted a Brother” is a top 10 song in America, though not on a traditional chart. The tune rockets from No. 10 to No. 4 this week on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, the ranking of the most popular tracks on the app.
In just its second stint on the list, it bolts into the upper half of the top 10, which is no easy feat, as TikTok has become a hotspot for all trending tunes and huge smashes. “I Always Wanted a Brother” may stop where it sits, though, as the app is potentially banned for good in the country—though whether the Supreme Court-upheld decision will stand is not yet clear.
“I Always Wanted a Brother” is easily the biggest hit from the Mufasa soundtrack, which was penned almost entirely by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Hamilton creator worked with composer Nicholas Britell on the tune, though the theater superstar is responsible for almost all of the other original cuts featured in the box office smash.
The song is credited to four actors and singers, two of whom voice Mufasa, while the others perform as Taka, who—spoiler alert—goes on to be known as Scar. Aaron Pierre and Braelyn Rankins star as the lion king, while Theo Somolu and Kelvin Harrison, Jr., both take turns appearing as Taka/Scar.
“I Always Wanted a Brother” debuts on another Billboard chart this week, and it might just be getting started. The single launches at No. 13 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100, which acts essentially as a 25-spot extension of the main Hot 100, the list of the most-consumed songs in the U.S.
While it may be the hit from Mufasa: The Lion King, “I Always Wanted a Brother” won’t compete for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The film’s “Tell Me It’s You” is currently on the shortlist for a nomination for the musical prize, which Miranda needs to complete his EGOT.
