It’s been more than 20 years since the movie Chicago became both a critical and commercial juggernaut all around the world. The famed Broadway show was finally turned into a movie in 2002, and it wowed audiences. Millions discovered the legendary score, which is one of the most successful and popular in musical theater history.

Decades after Chicago made millions at the box office and collected several Oscars, the title is still reaching new audiences. This week, a song featured in the show reaches a Billboard chart for the first time, becoming a highly unlikely hit.

“We Both Reached for the Gun” arrives on the TikTok Billboard Top 50, Billboard’s ranking of the most-used tracks on TikTok. The tune opens at No. 48 on the 50-spot tally, which focuses solely on which titles are performing best on the social media platform.

The song is not credited to the show, nor the composers. Instead, vocalists Christine Baranski, Cleve Asbury, Shaun Amyot, Rick Negron, and Taye Diggs all score a hit on the TikTok Billboard Top 50. It appears to be the first win for all those artists on the tally.

“We Both Reached for the Gun” is a catchy cut that serves an important purpose in Chicago. It’s performed during the moment when the heroine, Roxie Hart, pleads her case to the press in an effort to get away with the murder she committed. In the film, parts of the track are performed by Renée Zellweger and Richard Gere, alongside the other names mentioned above.

Chicago produced a highly successful soundtrack, which only added to the movie’s overall performance. The set, packed with tunes from the original show, as well as a few new additions, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It was eventually certified double platinum for shifting at least two million units in the U.S. alone.
