The Land Wars action film Ka Whawhai Tonu premieres in Hamilton tonight ahead of its release in theatres on June 27, and the theme song is also available now.

More than 1200 guests are expected at tonight’s showing of the film set and shot in the region.

Directed by Michael Jonathan, it stars Temuera Morrison, Cliff Curtis, Miriama Smith, Paku Fernandez and Hinerangi Harawira-Nicholas as well as some descendants of those who fought at the battle of Orakau in 1864.

Tiki Taane says his theme song Hold On To The Dream is a counter to some of the darker aspects of the movie.

“Hopefully its like a cleansing for people. When they sit through that film and then they hear that song at the end that can uplift them out of that space, into the world of light – Te Ao Mārama. So yeah, a lot depth, and a lot of thought and blood, sweat and tears went into making the music for this film for sure,” he says.

Tiki Taane says he hopes the film and the music for it will inspire future generations to accept the truth of history.
