An Almost Christmas Story | Trailer for a new short film by David Lowery

October 15, 20244 Mins Read

The Green Knight director David Lowery’s animated short film An Almost Christmas Story is in November. Here’s a trailer to remind us.

Definitions of ‘almost Christmas’ may vary from household to household, but for Disney+ it looks like mid November is the sweet spot. The platform will be releasing David Lowery’s animated short, An Almost Christmas Story, and coming from a filmmaker that often surprises and delights, we’re hoping for a delightful short that can join the ranks of the annual Christmas canon.

According to Collider, the film ‘will introduce young Moon (Cary Christopher), an owl who’s instructed to never leave a tree in the woods in order to survive. But destiny has different plans for the small bird. The tree that was meant to protect Moon becomes a Christmas tree in the middle of New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza. But that doesn’t mean the owl will be completely doomed; a lost girl named Luna (Estella Madrigal) will be there to help.’

It certainly sounds like seasonal fun, doesn’t it? Lowery recently collaborated with Disney on Peter Pan And Wendy, the Disney+ movie, but has also directed more offbeat films such as 2021’s The Green Knight. His next feature is Mother Mary, a project that has been described as a ‘pop epic’ with the story ‘following a fictional musician and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer.”

That film stars Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. Even Lowery himself has admitted to being ‘baffled’ by it.

We’re expecting to see that one in 2025 but before that arrives, we’ll be getting some ‘some almost Chistmas’ magic from the director. It’s a stop motion film so hurrah for Christmas! It’s produced by Alfonso Cuaron so once again, hurrah for Christmas! The only question is whether we’ll be able to resist watching it too early before Christmas. Here’s the trailer below for An Almost Christmas Story.

An Almost Christmas Story will stream on Disney+ from the 15th November.
