Final Baffling Minecraft Movie Trailer Shows Off A Block Filled Nightmare… And Pandas!

The first domino in the 2025 “Year of Video Game Movie Adaptations” is soon to fall, with A Minecraft Movie set to hit theaters on April 4th.

In light of Warner Bros’ looming blockbuster, they’ve released the final two-and-a-half-minute-long trailer showing off their adaptation of the Minecraft Overworld, Nether, and… pandas! If only the pandas alone could win over fans of the Minecraft franchise, as the trailer brought out some valid skepticism from many.

This final trailer did its best to try and showcase more classic Minecraft items and locations to try and bring as much nostalgic-centered hype to the film, to mixed success. Blending Minecraft’s distinct block-style aesthetic with high powered animation and live actors was always going to be an uphill battle, and in some spots of the trailer it looks like the team at Warner Bros did a good job.

Early on in the trailer, we see one of the protagonists craft together a diamond sword that captures a traditional sword shape while still keeping the pixelated makeup from Minecraft.

However, the same issues from the past trailer still haunt this iteration. Scenes where our group of protagonists are exploring the overworld still feel off with the live actors, and some of the new mobs shown off give off a much different impression than intended.

We get a look at pigmen, pandas, wolves, ghasts, sheep, and more villagers in this preview, and all look seriously off with this half block half real life animation style A Minecraft Movie is going for. One popular Reddit comment under the trailer from user Professional_Ad_9101 puts it perfectly, “It is incredibly ugly. Like some is just outright scary and not in the intentional way. A gross photorealistic interpretation of the games style.”

Others are seemingly hung up on the fact that the trailer continues to only show meaningful lines from Jason Momoa’s character and Jack Black as Steve, when the movie’s true protagonist is supposed to be Henry. Henry’s character is supposed to symbolize every kid who logs on to play Minecraft to capture the main demographic of the film, children, yet we’ve barely heard anything from him through two trailers.

There’s also the obvious plot tweak made by WB with Steve seemingly being an actual person, which directly contradicts Minecraft the game, which has Steve as a product of the game. This is somewhat excusable because it allows a guy like Jack Black to play the pivotal role of Steve, who in the film likely was a human that got stuck in Minecraft years ago.

With all the criticisms being fleshed out, A Minecraft Movie will likely still be a big hit at the box office because, at the end of the day, this movie is made for kids. Yes, Minecraft has existed so long that many early players have now completely grown up and still cherish the franchise fondly, hence all the criticism from older audiences, but this movie’s primary focus is to get kids in theaters on release. Once April rolls around, we’ll see if A Minecraft Movie brings home a big payday for Warner Bros or not, and if skeptical fans are won over despite interesting trailers prior.
