The original film haunted theater screens over a century ago, and a new imagining is just on the cusp of release. The latest trailer for Nosferatu is out now. Based on the 1922 film, the original Nosferatu, directed by F.W. Mernau, follows a man as he investigates an old castle in the countryside, only to inadvertently unleash the wrath of the vicious Count Orlok on a small town in Germany.
This time around, Nosferatu is written and directed by Robert Eggers. Eggers past theatrical works, serving as both writer and director, include 2015’s The Witch, 2019’s The Lighthouse, and 2022’s The Northman. Bill Skarsgård steps into the role of Count Orlock, originally played by Max Schreck in the first film, then by Klaus Kinski in 1979’s Nosferatu The Vampyre. Skarsgård is no stranger to bringing iconic horror creatures to life. One of his biggest claims to fame was his portrayal of Pennywise, the clown antagonist of 2017’s IT and 2019’s IT: Chapter 2.
The rest of the cast is filled out by Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Ineson. Deadline reports that following The Northman, Nosferatu is the next time that production company Focus Features will put out an Eggers film.
Nosferatu hits theaters December 25th. Check out the trailer below.
