The trailer for Wicked and Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang’s remake of The Wedding Banquet has been released.
The original 1993 movie focuses on a bisexual Taiwanese man who has to marry a mainland Chinese woman to hide his gay relationship and make his traditional parents happy.
This remake follows a similar premise, except the man ropes in his lesbian housemate to pretend to be his pretend other half, and their respective partners have to go along with the ruse too.

Directed by Fire Island helmer Andrew Ahn, the remake also stars Korean actor Han Gi-chan, Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Lily Gladstone, and Star Wars‘ Kelly Marie Tran.
The Wedding Banquet premiered at the Sundance Film Festival recently and currently has a very strong 91% on Rotten Tomatoes from 11 reviews.
Screen Rant called the movie “hilarious”, sharing: “The ensemble cast is impeccable and has fantastic chemistry and comedic timing. The combination of cast and storytelling makes for an emotionally gorgeous, hilarious, and touching film that you’ll want to rewatch over and over again.”
Reviewers have also praised the performances of Gladstone and Tran specifically, citing how their characters’ storyline about trying to conceive via IVF is powerfully portrayed by the duo.

When the remake was announced, the original movie’s director Ang Lee said in a statement: “It warms my heart to see how my film from so many years ago has inspired a new generation to reimagine a new and different version. I look forward to seeing what Andrew Ahn and his wonderful cast create.”
Meanwhile, Yang will also be seen on the big screen later this year in the second half of Wicked, officially titled Wicked: For Good.
The Wedding Banquet will be released on April 18 in US cinemas.
