Let the tournament begin!

Mortal Kombat 2‘s first trailer arrived Thursday with a blood-soaked look at the upcoming sequel, in theaters and IMAX Oct. 24. In addition to franchise newcomer Karl Urban (The Boys) as Johnny Cage, the footage shows us first looks at characters like Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, and CJ Bloom as Baraka, and (as previously revealed by Entertainment Weekly) Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.

The previous movie, released in 2021, showed how the Outworld sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chin Han) and his forces attempted to wipe out Earth’s champions before the big Mortal Kombat tournament between fighters from different realms.

The ending revealed new recruit Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a former MMA fighter and a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion (Shōgun Emmy winner Hiroyuki Sanada), setting off to Hollywood to add another champion to their ranks, Mr. Cage, the star of such movies (within the movie) as Cool Hand Cage, Hard to Cage, and Rebel Without a Cage.

Warner Bros. has since created a fake trailer for Johnny’s Uncaged Fury film as promo for Mortal Kombat 2.

“His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores,” Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-creator and head of gaming developer NetherRealm Studios, previously told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He’s adding his own flare to it, but I think it’ll feel fresh. There’s like a novelty factor in there.”

The sequel, directed by Simon McQuoid, will now see Earth’s champions participating in the Mortal Kombat. If they lose, Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), the overlord of Outworld, would invade.

“They keep score throughout the movie,” Boon said of the tournament. “There’s a visual representation of who is winning…. It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.”

Returning from the first Mortal Kombat alongside Han, Tan, and Sanada are Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero, Max Huang as Kung Lao (even though he died during the last movie), and Josh Lawson as Kano (another supposedly dead character).

“We’ve killed a number of characters who are in Mortal Kombat 1 and our latest games. So we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that,” Boon teased. “There are ways to bring dead characters back.”
