Movie fans cannot believe that a Matthew McConaughey film is actually real.

The 90s and 00s are the Wild West in many ways; going back and watching any sitcom from that time will lead to you finding transphobic jokes, homophobia, casual sexism, and racism aplenty.

Despite this though, you will still be shocked at the premise of McConaughey’s film that came out just over 20 years ago.

The film in question is called Tiptoes, and starring alongside McConaughey is Gary Oldman, playing a person with dwarfism.

McConaughey was reminded of the film in an appearance on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast hosted by comedians Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer.

Segura told the actor: “Did you know that when people watch the trailer for Tiptoes, they think it’s a sketch. Did you know that, that no one thinks it’s real?”

While the actor states he didn’t know, he does add that people suggest to him that they think it’s off of Saturday Night Live when he shows it to them.

The plot of the film follows McConaughey as Steven, a man of average height who hides from his fiancé that he comes from a family of people with dwarfism.

Watching the trailer he says: “I’ve never seen the trailer. This is so good.”

The actor has remained a defender of the film, despite its politically incorrect plot and the criticism it has engendered.

He said: “It doesn’t look real, but damn, that’s a good trailer. That goes for it.”

He went on to defend the concept, saying: “Look, it was obviously a wild concept. [But] you see the talent it drew.

“It was anarchic; it still had some heart to it, which I think maybe in the script, felt less sentimental than that did.

“We knew it was a soap opera, but it felt so corny. Like, ‘This is wild’.”

Producer on the film Chris Hanley defended the movie to Yahoo! UK, saying it ‘was a story that was intended to support everybody in the world no matter what size they were’.

He went on to say: “Looking back, I think the movie has some great merits for what it is, despite its flaws and despite the background story.”

Peter Dinklage, arguably the most famous actor to ever have dwarfism, said of the film in 20212: “There was some flak.

“Why would you put Gary Oldman on his knees? That’s almost like blackface.’

“I have my own opinions about political correctness, but I was just like, ‘It’s Gary Oldman. He can do whatever he wants.’”
