Nicole Kidman and Matthew Macfadyen unravel in ‘Holland’ trailer

February 25, 20253 Mins Read

Nicole Kidman‘s fairy tale life turns into a twisted fable in the trailer for her latest thriller, Holland.

In the upcoming feature from director Mimi Cave, the Academy Award winner plays Nancy Vandergroot, a teacher and homemaker who lives a life of domestic bliss with her community pillar husband (Matthew Macfadyen) and son (Belfast breakout Jude Hill) in Holland, a picturesque city in Michigan dotted with vibrant tulip fields and rustic lighthouses.

However, secrets lurk beneath the idyllic facade, and Nancy and her colleague — played by a nervous Gael García Bernal — become privy to them. The two soon “discover nothing in their lives is what it seems,” per the logline. And such illusions appear to pertain to Nancy’s husband, played by a secretive and mysterious Macfadyen.

“It might seem like we have everything all together,” says Kidman’s Nancy in the trailer, but “right under the surface, it’s like we’re being strangled.” What is Macfadyen’s patriarch hiding? Whatever it is could be ruinous: “This comes out, our life is ruined,” Nancy says.

Premiering at SXSW next month, the thriller from Amazon MGM hails from screenwriter Andrew Sodroski and counts Kidman as a producer. Kate Churchill, Peter Dealbert, and Per Saari also produced, while Sodroski and Bart Lipton executive produced.

“There’s an odd sort of offbeat humor about it that we’re hoping people get,” Cave recently told PEOPLE of the feature, sharing that Kidman’s role in the 1995 thriller To Die For loosely inspired the character of Nancy. “She plays this incredibly undertone comedic lead and I knew she had that in her, but maybe just hasn’t been in a role [like that] in a while,” Cave said. “She is so funny, so deeply funny.”

Kidman is fresh off her turn in A24’s Babygirl, the celebrated erotic thriller from Halina Reijn about a high-powered CEO who begins an affair with a much younger intern (played by Harris Dickinson). She also recently appeared in the miniseries The Perfect Couple, about a lavish wedding marred by a murder, and on the spy thriller series Lioness.

Macfadyen is fresh off his turn on the acclaimed black comedy series Succession, about the dysfunctional family of an international media conglomerate, and as Mr. Paradox in the blockbuster Marvel movie Deadpool & Wolverine. Bernal recently reunited with former costar and childhood pal Diego Luna on the celebrated series La Máquina, about the exploits of an aging boxer and his manager as they try for one last shot at a title.
