Rihanna returns to the screen as we’ve never seen her before in a new Smurfs movie trailer, released by Paramount on February 6th. Rihanna will star as central character Smurfette, who was previously voiced by Demi Lovato. The trailer encourages viewers to pre-save the movie soundtrack, which promises to feature new Rihanna songs.

The trailer begins with Rihanna addressing the audience, looking over ovular sunglasses to show flashy blue eyeshadow. “I can’t wait for you all to see it this summer,” she says. Her 2008 hit ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ plays throughout the first half of the snippet. She had teased the trailer in an Instagram post on Wednesday, with the caption “in my blue era.”

The last instalment, Smurfs: The Lost Village, was released in 2017. The 2025 addition promises a more modern take, with an ‘Influencer’ Smurf included in the cast, and the suggestion of a new, boundary-pushing animation style near the end of the clip.

Rihanna will be co-starring with Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll and Dan Levy. Chris Miller, director of animated classics such as Shrek the Third and Puss in Boots, will be taking the reigns of the project. Rihanna is also cited as a movie producer.

The movie will also include the song ‘Higher Love,’ which was recorded by Desi Trill and features DJ Khaled, Cardi B, Natania, and Subhi.

Rihanna’s last album, Anti, was released in 2016. In that time, she has stepped away from the limelight, opting to perform only a handful of celebrity-studded events. She also launched Fenty Beauty back in 2017, which is now worth almost $3billion.

She has even featured on several collaborative tracks, including on a 2018 Drake remix. Still, fans have been demanding new music for almost a decade. This movie promises to deliver.
