The trailer for the upcoming Wes Anderson film The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio del Toro, has been released.
The movie depicts del Toro as Zha-zha Korda, one of the wealthiest aviation businessmen in Europe who, after his sixth plane crash, recruits his nun daughter Sister Liesl (Mia Threapleton) as the inheritor of his estate.
Alongside del Toro and Threapleton—the daughter of Hollywood actor Kate Winslet—is a massive all-star ensemble cast featuring Tom Hanks, Michael Cera, Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, and many others.
The story of The Phoenician Scheme was written by Anderson alongside longtime collaborator Roman Coppola, which the director announced during the promotion of his last feature film, 2023’s Asteroid City.
He said the script had been written prior to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA writers’ strike, and that production would commence once the strike was over. Filming took place in Germany between March and June 2024.
The movie marks a return for del Toro into the Anderson cinematic universe, following his role in the 2021 film The French Dispatch. For the part of Threapleton, The Phoenician Scheme represents her rise into the Hollywood ranks as an actor, having previously starred in the TV drama I Am… Ruth alongside her mother in 2022.
The upcoming blockbuster will be Anderson’s 13th turn as director, following on from his acclaimed short film anthology adaptation The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More for Netflix in 2024.
The Phoenician Scheme will be released in the US on May 30th, 2025.
